Description

March 31, 1931. s. TISDALE I WIND MOTOR Filed Feb.. 8, 1929 Patented Mar. 31, 1931 UNITED STATES LEO S. TISDALE, OF NEW ALBANY, MISSISSIPPI WIND MOTOR Application filed February 8, 1929. Serial No. 338,511.
The present invention relates to fluid operating motors and has for its principal object to provide a fluid operated wheehmounted for rotation upon a suitable supportlng structure and provided with a plurality of pivoted blades for receiving the force of the fluid for the operation of the Wheel and also provided so as to prevent the same from oiiering resistance to the flow of the fluid durlng a predetermined period of rotation of the wheel. A further object is to provide a fluid operated wheel of this character adapted to employ the use of either air or water as the fluid operating agent. A still further object is to provide a device of this character of a simple and practical construction, which is strong and durable, efficient and economical in performance, inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended. Other objects and advantages reside in the special construction, combination and arrangement of the various elements forming the invention as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout the specification and in which Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the wheel shown in operative position and with its supporting base shown in section,
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view through the wheel and support therefor, and
Figure 3 is a perspective View of one of the blades.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration I have shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates a supporting base having a vertically extending recess formed therein within which to receive the lower end 6 of a wheel supporting standard 7 At the upper end of the standard 7 is arranged a bearing bracket 8 within which a shaft 9 is journalled for rotation. The shaft is horizontally disposed and formed of pair of shaft sections having heads 10 for attaching at opposite sides of a pair of hub shell sections 11 combining to form a hollow sphere.
5 The spherical sections 11 are disposed at the opposite sides of a spherical hub 12 and with their walls in spaced relation from the hub asclearly shown in Figure 2 of the drawing. The hub 12 is'formed at the center of a disk wheel 13 and to the opposite faces of which is arranged a series of blades 14, preferably in pairs, immediately opposite each other. Each of the blades are carried on a rockshaft 15 extending radially of the hub with their inner ends inserted in openings formed in the shell sectionsand arcuately shaped as .at16 for fitting between the shell and the hub so as to permit pivotal movement of the shafts. The outer ends of the shafts are journalled in eyes 17- carried on the faces of the disk. The standard 7 is of a substantially bifurcated formation as clearly shown in F igure 2 of the drawing whereby to permit the wheel to rotate between the furcations thereof. Each of the shafts 15 carry inner and ,outer laterally extending pins 18 and 19 respectively, arranged adjacent the inner and outer ends of the shafts. Extending forwardly and rearwardly from the standard is an outer arcuate guide 20 composed of a pair of spaced parallel guide members disposedat opposite sides of the wheel and between which the wheel rim is adapted to pass.
The upper ends of the sections of the standard 7 are also provided with an inner arouate guide 20' with their inner edges also disposed in spaced relation and providing space for the passage of the shafts therebetween. Upon the rotation of the wheel the pins at the inner ends of the shafts will engage the 35 guide 20 and the pins at the outer ends of the shafts will engage the guides 20 whereby to rotate the shafts and turn the blades 14 edgewise. As soon as the shafts leave the opposite end of the guides the force of the fluid striking the blades will cause the same to open for receiving the full driving force of the fluid. The lower end of the standard 7 is rotatably supported in the base 5 and at one side of the standard and extending parallel with the wheel is a rudder 21 adapted to keep the wheel headed into the air or water so that the blades will respond to the force thereof. It will thus be apparent that during a portion of the rotation of the wheelsubstantially half of the blades will be feathered so as to offer no resistance to the water while the remaining blades will be open to receive the force of the fluid and thus cause the rotation of the wheel. It is obvious that the invention is susceptible of various changes and modifications without departing from the spirit thereof, or the scope of the appended claims, and I accordingly claim as my own all such forms of the invention to which I am entitled.
I claim 1. A fluid motor comprising a base, a standard rotatably supported therein and having its upper end bifurcated, a shaft journalled for rotation at the upper portion of the standard, a pair of cooperating hub shell sections attached to the shaft, a wheel having a spherical hub disposed within the shell for rotation upon the shaft axis and adapted to travel between the furcations of the standard, a plurality of shafts carried by the wheel and extending radially from said hub, a blade carried by each of said shafts, a pin extending laterally from each blade shaft and stationary means engageable with said pins whereby to feather said blades during a pre-determined period of rotation of the wheel.
2. A fluid motor comprising a base, a standard rotatably supported therein and having its upper end bifurcated, a shaft journalled for rotation at the upper portion of the stand ard, a pair of cooperating hub shell sections attached to the shaft, a wheel having a spherical hub disposed within the shell for rotation upon the shaft axis and adapted to travel between the furcations of the standard, said shell sections being in spaced relation from the hub, a plurality of shafts carried by the wheel and extending radially with respect to the hub, said shafts having their inner ends curved and disposed between the hub and the shell to provide a rotatable support for the shafts, a blade carried by each of the shafts, a pin extending laterally from each blade shaft and stationary means engageable with said pins whereby to feather said blades during a predetermined period of rotation of the wheel.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
LEO S. TISDALE.
