PEASE, OF EAST HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT AIR MGISTENER My invention relates to the class of devices employed for moistening the air, particularly such as is circulated through living apartments, the device being particularly an applicable to hot airfurnaces, and an object of my invention, among others, is the production of an apparatus of this type that shall be simple in construction and particue larly efiicient in operation.

In the accompanying drawings the numeral 7 denotes a furnace of the hot air type, that may be of any ordinary form and c011- struction, and embodying a fire pot 8 having a dome 9 thereover for heating air passing through a heating chamber 10. A draft flue 11 communicates with the dome 9 and heating pipes 12 communicates with the heating chamber 10, the flue 11 leading to a chimney and the pipes 12 extending to compartments to be heated by the furnace. All of these parts may be of ordinary form and construction.
The numeral 13 denotes a cold air or venimproved moistening apparatus is installed in this conduit, in that form of the apparatus shown herein. This apparatus embodies aefan 14: rotatably mounted within the con-; duit 13 and provided with driving means actuated by-an element, as water, used for moistening the air passing through the conduit13. This fan is rotatably mounted in a post 15 rising from a frame extending across the conduit 18. This frame maybe of any suitable construction, but I prefer to embody it as a means for conducting the water for driving purposes. To this end, this frame comprises pipes 16 interconnected and 6X". tending across theconduit 13, a supply pipe 17 being connected with the pipe 16 for the supply thereto of Water or other driving fluid from any'suitable source. Nipples 18 project fromrthe pipes 16 to deliver water therefrom, supplied under force, to buckets 19, said buckets being carried by and supported at the lower edge of a band 20, the upper edge of said band being secured to the outer ends of the blades of the fan-1 1. Any suitable means, as a valve 21, may be employed for controllingfiow of water into the pipes'16 and to the-nipples 18.
A reservoir 22 is formed in the conduit 13, in the structure herein shown, this being in the form of a bend in the conduit, and a drain pipe 23 extends from said reservoir as a means for keeping it sufi'iciently free from water to enable afree' circulation of fresh air through the conduit.
It will be noted that in the use of my improved apparatus water is projected by the nipples 18 against the buckets 19 of the turbine, and this forceful contact of the water with the buckets causes the water to be projected in a spray in different directions and particularly against the blades of the fan 14 which are rotated by the action of the turbine. The fan acts to further convert the water into a spray and this spray is carried by the incoming currents through the con-' duit 13 into the heating chamber 10 where it is diffused throughout the air which is delivered to the pipes 12 in a properly moistened condition. It will, therefore, be seen that I have made use of the water used for air inoistening purposes as an agent in driving the fan, and the fan not only serves to induce an inward flow of air through the conduit 13 but also to convert the water into a spray to be diffused throughout the air currents.
In accordance with the provisions'of the patent statutes, I have described the principles of operation of my invention together with the device which I now consider to rep resent the best embodiment thereof; but I desire to have it understood that the device shown is only illustrative, and that the in vention may be carried out by other means and applied to. uses other than those above set out. i
I claim r 1. A moistening apparatus including a ventilating conduit, a circulating fan rotatably mounted in said conduit, a turbine surrounding and supported by said fan, and means for projecting a driving and moistening fluid against said turbine for rotating said fan.
'2. A moistening apparatus including a ventilating conduit, a fan rotatably mounted in said conduit, a support secured to the peripheral edge of said fan, buckets secured to said support, and means for projecting a driving and moistening fluid againstsaid buckets to rotate said fan.
3. A moistening apparatus including a ventilating conduit, a fan rotatably mounted in said conduit, a band secured'to the outer ends of the fan blades to enclose said fan, a set of buckets secured to said band at one side of the fan blades and means for projecting'a driving and moistening fluid against said buckets to rotate said fan.
4. A moistening apparatus including a ventilating conduit, a frame comprising pipes located within said conduit, a'nipple connected with said pipes for conducting fluid under pressure therefrom, means for admit-ting fluid to said pipes, a supporting post projecting from said pipes, a fan rotat ably mounted in said post, and buckets rigid- 1y connected with said fan to receive fluid,
projected from said nipples.
