. y This invention relates to improvementsin bell caps for vapor-liquid contact equipment.
A rincipal object of the invention 1s to providb a simple; efi'ective device free i 6 parts likelyto get out of orderand adapted shown in Fig. 1;
a workman without the.
Fig. 3 is a bottom planview of the chim ney shown in. Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 1 but illustrating additional securing means; and
Figs. and 6 are front elevations of the securing means. v Referring first to Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive, 1 denotes. an inverted cup shaped member or bell having slots 2 arranged in it near the lower margin. The bell restsupon a supporting frame 3 commonly called a chimney This consists of legs 4 carrying an outturned flange 5 at the bottom- Downwardly extending lugs 6 are formed on the flange and are adapted to be received in openings 7 in a plate 8, about a' circular orifice '8' therein. Re- -cesses 9 are provided at oppositepoints in 4 the flange. It will be understood. that the plate 8 is installed in the usual manner'in a 5 column or tower. As in common practice there may be a number of plates arranged at different levels in the column or tower, each plate carrying alarge number of hell caps.
The stem or shank 10 of .a T-bolt passes through a central perforation 11 in the top of chimney 4, and a perforation 12 in the top the bell. The stem is threaded at the top to receive'a nut 13. The head 14 of the T-bolt is cutaway at the top on one side to provide a flange 15. On the other side it is recessed at 16 to receive the edge of the plate.
In assembling the improved bell cap, the T-bolt stem 10 is first run through the perforation 11 in chimney 3 and the nut 13 is loosely secured at the top of the stem. This asup tight.
to receive the cutaway not to interfere with sembly is placed over orifice 8' in 1plate 8 by pushing flange 15 under the ower ed of the plate and recess 16 in the T-bolt head is then engaged with the edge of the plate. The end of the T-bolt head is received in a recess 9. The lugs 6 are seated in grooves 7. When assembled in this waygethe T-bolt cannot drop through the plate cause it is centered by the chimney. Althou h the T- bolt has some freedom enough'to rmit the 'recessed end to become disengag from the plate. The T-bolt when loosely mounted can easily be slipped. through the opening 8'.
To complete the mountin" of the bell cap, 5 the.. nu,t"13 is removed, the 11 slip ed over the-T-bolt stem, the nut replaced an screwed of motion t 's is not In removing the bell reversed. The nut is taken moved and the nut then replaced. The T- bolt is then disen aged from the plate and the assembly is lifte out.
It will be seen that both the mountin and dismounting of the bell cap can be easify effected by one workman. There is no necessity for a helper below the plate to hold a part of the bell cap while another workman above the plate fastens or unfastens it.
In the form of the invention shown in Figs. 4 tobfinclusive the principle is the sameas described above but additional securing or filler means are provided. These means comprise a slide 17 having an orifice 18 adapted cap, this procedure is a rider 19 having a ifurcation 20 adapted to be set-astride the cutaway end. The slide 17 has a lip 18 extending outwardly at its to In mounting this type of hell cap the rider IS removed and the slide slipped back towards the center of the T-bolt. The cutawa portionshould be of greater extent in thls case than in the form shown in Figs. 1 to 3 so as to permit the rider to move far enough back slipping the T-bolt through the plate. When it has been slipped through, the slide is moved over so that its lip 18 rests upon the edge of the plate. The rider is then inserted between the slide and 9 ofl, the bell re- 70 end of the T-bolt and 85 I 4 to 6 may be motion of the edge of the plate,
ceive theedge of th securing t protruding from the bell.
, erally extending edge of the the-bolt head so that the slide cannot move The form of the invention shown in Figs. used if limited freedom oi T-bolt in the plate opening, rior to tightening the nut, is objectionable or any reason. i 7
Various changes and alternative arrange; ments may be made within the scope of the appended claims in which it is my intention to claim all novelty inherent in the invention as broadly as the prior art permits.
I claim: 1-. A bell cap comprising a bell perforated adjacent its periphery and adapted to cover an opening in a plate, a bolt having a laterallyslotted head adjoining the underside of the bell, the slot being adapted to receive the and means associated with the shank of the bolt for drawing the bell and head together.
2. A bell cap comprising a bell adapted to cover an opening in a plate, a bolt' having a laterally s otted head adjoining the underside of the bell, the slot being a apted to ree plate, and means for he bell to the bolt with the, head 2). A bell cap comprising 9.- adjacent its periphery and adapted to cover an opening in a plate, a. bolt, the head of which adjoins the underside of the bell and is laterally slotted on one side to receive the edge of the plate, and is provided with a latflange on the opposed side on the opposite side of the slot from the'bell, and means for securing the bell to the bolt; 4. A bell cap comprising a bell perforated adjacent its periphery an adapted to cover an opening in a plate, 'a bolt, the head of which adjoins the underside of the bell and is laterally slotted on one side to receive the plate and is provided with a laterally extendingflange on-the opposed side on the opposite side of the slot from the bell,
filler means interposed between theends of the flange, and means for securing the bell to the bolt.
