Description
' spreader elements 12 carried onthe respective Patented Mar. 10, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE EDGAR E. GREVE, OF IBELLEVUE, PENNSYLVANIA ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGN- .MENTS, T0 OIL WELL SUPPLY COMPANY, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, A
COZRIPORATION OF NEW JERSEY TRAVELING BLOCK Application filed February 13, 1929. Serial No. 339,625.
guards and at the same time provide eflicient guard means; to provide a construction embodying guard means of a character that w1ll not enlarge the block structure nor render it difiicult to handle; and a construction including guards embodied in a unitary frame structure.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate applications of my invention: 7
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of a travcling block embodying my invention;
Fig. 2, a side elevational View; :Flg. 8, a detail sectional view taken on the line TIL-III of Fig. 1, and particularly showing a portion of the guard and a portion of adivision plate of the block;
Fig. 4:, a detail view showing'a modifica- ,tlon; in this instance, a portion of the guard isformed integral with a division plate; and Fig. 5, a detail sectionalview taken on line the side plates or members of'the traveling block frame; these plates being connected 7 near their centers byv a transversely extending sheave shaft G-having nuts 7 mounted on the ends ofsaid shaft. The side platesof the frame are further joined together near their tops and bottoms by means of tie bolts or members 8 and 9 respectively.
ed onthe shaft 6 in the usual manner, and 11 .posed therebetween.- Said plates 11 are maintained in spaced relation by means of Referring to the drawings, 5.5 design ates:
tie rods and particularly shown on the top tie rod 8 in Fig. 2. These plates or diaphra'gms, as well as the side plates 55, are preferably of a configuration to permit a slight extension of the rims of the sheaves beyond the plates. as particularly shown by Fig. 1. This construction permits the block to be handled readily, as it may be moved along on the derrick floor and other places by means of the projecting portions of the sheaves.
The frame of the traveling block has a flat base portion enabling the frame or the block body to be supported in an upright position after the clevis carrier and clevis structure are swung free of the lower ends of the side members 5-5.
Pivotally connected to the upper tie bolt 8 is a block supporting member 13 designed to be connected with a rope or cable, not shown. Suspended within the frame and near its base portion and on the lower tie bolt is a clevis carrier structure 14. This carrier, as above stated, is adapted to be swung on the lower tie bolt 9 in such manner that it will be free of the base portion of the block, thereby permitting the block to stand in an up right position when it is desired to string the line or for other purposes. 15 designates a clevis carried by the clevis carrier.
An important and characteristic feature of the present invention resides in the guard the hands ofoperators from parts or men:-
bers of the mg or other articles falling onto the block and becoming entangled with the ropes.
These means, illustrated and as preferred, are embodied in and really constitute a part of the block structure, and are to be distinguished from the usual detachable guard devices heretofore employed with blocks of the character 01" my invention. The guards, as shown, are either fixedly secured to the side members and/or the separator plates, asin the form of Fig. 1, or partly comprise integral portions of the separator plates, as in the form of Fig. t.
The guards are disposed ad acent the ropes and sheaves on oppos te faces of the.- frame,
yond the sides thereof, said plates having side edge portions extending upwardly and inwardly from approximately a plane pass ing horizontally through the axis of the sheaves, individual guards relatively close to the sheaves, said guards having Webs in the planes of the plates and Welded to the latter at said portions, and heads of angular form extending laterally from the outer edges of the Webs and over the sheaves.
V In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
EDGAR v E. GREVE.
