sists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements hereinafter descnbed and claimed.
An object of my invention is to provide a log holding device for cars which can be moved into an out of the way position for permitting the logs to be rolled off from the fiat car rather than be lifted.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the type described in which the log-holding mechanism may be released from either side of the car or from either end.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the type described which is extremely simple inconstruction and w h makes use of a positive locking mechanism.
Other objects and advantages will appear as the specification proceeds, and the novel features of the device will be particularly pointed out in the claims hereto attachec.

There are two members 7 associated with each pair of angle irons.
The particular shape of the member 7 is shown in Figure 5. The member has a rack portion 8, guide flanges 9, and nclined upper surface 10. Figure 4 shows how the flanges 9 slide in guide members 11, the latter being secured to the car frame 1 by bolts 12 or other suitable fastening means.
The members 7 are moved vertically by pinions 13, these being mounted upon shafts 1 the latter in turn being actuated by hand wheels 15 or other suitable mechanism.

If desired, all of the members 7 may be moved below the JOY) of the car during the loading of the logs thereon. The usual practice, however, is to leave the members proiecting above the top as shown to the left in Figures 2 and 3. The logs are lowered upon flat car and are held rol ing laterally by the members.
lVhen removing the logs from the car, the members 7 on the removal side of the car are lowered. If the logs are small, members on the side need to be lowered, while if the logs extend the entire length of the car,
