APPARATUS FOR MANUFACTURING TIRE CASINGS Filed Sept.
'Patentecl Mar. 10, 1931 UNITED: STATES PATENT QFFICE -DETROIT, MICHIGAN, CORPORAIQFYGIT (3F MIGHIGA'N I AlPPARATUS FOR- MANUFAG'EUIING TIRE CASINGS Application filed September 24', 1928. Serial No. 308,092.
This invention relates to a machine for forming a tire casing from a ring-like band of built up fabric andrubber known as a pulley-band.
v. The present invention is an improvement over that disclosed in my Patent No. 1,507,563, granted Sept. 9, 1924.
An object of the invention is to provide a pulley band expanding machine with a novel means for forming an air tight seal. It is also an object of theinvention to provide a new and more convenient means for introducing the pulley band within the machine. Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear in the detailed description which follows.
Without intending to limit the invention more than is required by'the prior art, and with the specific embodiment herein disclosed in mind, it consists in providing the casing of a pulley-loand expanding machine with hinged end plates which may be opened to admit a pulley band and which are provided with apertures the edges of which are adapted to contact with and form an air tight seal with the pulley band.
An understanding of the invention may be had from the following detailed description and the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of my machine;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation, partly in section, of my machine.
The casing of the machine consists of an annular'side wall 1 to which is hinged at each side a pair of end plates 3, 3 and 4, 4. The casing is supported upon the frame 2 in any suitable manner as by means of rivets.
Each pair of end plates 3, 3 and 4, 4 is provided with an aperture 5 the edge of which is adapted to contact with a pulley band when I in closed position as shown in Fig. 2. Sectors 6, 6 are attached to the plates 3, 3 through shafts 7,, 7 which are pivotally connected to the side wall of the casing through brackets 7 7 Sectors 8, 8 are rigidly attached to end plates 4, 4 which are rotatably mounted on the side wall 1 as indicated at 9. The sectors 6 and 8 interengage in pairs as shown in Fig. 2'so as to coordinate the movement of the end plates 3, 3 and 4, 4. Rod 10 inter- ADRIAN o. Anson-1T, JR, on nn'rnorr, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR. TO MORGAN & WRIGHT, on
connects the sectors 8, 8 through crank arms 11, 11. A lever 12 is ri idly attached to a crank arm 11 formanipulating the sectors 6, 6 and 8, 8 and thereby effecting the opening and closing of the end plates 3, 3 and 4, 4.
A platform 13 is provided upon which the pulley band may rest in proper relation with the casing when first inserted into the chine, this platform being mounted upon the frame 5 bythe beams 14. I
A source of suction is provided through the pipe system 15 connecting with the side wall 1 of the casing for exhausting the air therefrom.
In the operation of the machine the lever 12 is manipulated to open the end plates 3, 3 and 4, 4 into the position indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2. A pulley band is inserted into the'machine, its lower edge being placed upon the table 13. nipulatcd toclose the end plates 3, 3 and 4, 4 bringing them into the position shown in full lines in Fig. 2. In this position the edges of the apertures 5 formed in each pair of the end plates contacts with the pulley band and forms a seal therewith sufliciently tight for the purpose. Suction is applied through the pipe system 15 to exhaust the "air from the casing thereby causing the pulley band to be drawn from the form shown in full lines in Fig. 2 to the form shown in dotted lines in that figure. A curing bag is then inserted into the casing, the lever 12 manipulated. to open the end plates 3, 3 and 4, 4 and the casing with the curing bag removed from the machine.
It is clear from the showing in the drawings and the above detailed description that fective character than heretofore employed.
WVhile I have disclosed specificallyone embodimentof my invention, it is not intended 'tothereby limit my invention inasmuch as modifications obvious to one skilled in the art maybe made therein all within the scope of my invention, and for an understanding of I claim and desire the scope of my invention reference should be made to the following claims.
Having thus described my invention what to protect by Letters Patent'is:
I 1. In a pulley band expanding machine, an
annular casingfor expanding the pulley band, said casing having apertured end plates rotatably mounted thereon, adapted to be opened to receive the pulley band and to be closedto form a seal With the pulley band.
2. In a pulley band expanding machine, a

ed on each end of the ring, each pair, of said plates being provided with an opening the edges of which form a seal with the pulley band when in closed position, and which allows the passage of the pulley band when the plates-are in open position.
3.- In a pulley band expanding machine, a
casing having an annular side wall and a casing, plates for closing the opposite ends of 7 joint along their engaging edges.
