This invention relatesto improvements in autographie registers or the like and more` particularly in some of its-details to such registers portable innature or capable of 5 beinggcarried inthe hand when in use.
It is a general object ofthe invention to provide a register of th class mentioned which is simple and inexlinsive in construction, convenient and efficient `in use, and strong, yet so light as torender' it readily portable and capable of being carried in the hand while in use without undue strain or fatigue upon the user. 1
A further object is to provide a light,
strong, portable device of the class mentioned especially adapted for use in connection with 'delivery wagons or in coal or lumber yards or similar places where portability is a desirable factor, or for use as a .substitute 2,0 for the ordinary sales book.
A further object is to provide an improved arrangement for supporting one or more transfer or carbon strips in correct position over the writing table so asto minimize tearing or wrinkling of the transfer strips. and
to avoid interference with therecord strips or with the feeding movement thereof.
f. It is also an object of the invention to provide an improved arrangement for binding the transferstrip or strips in position at both sides of the writing table so the strips are at all times v, positively retained in correct operative position. 4 I
It is also an object to provide an improved support and housingor compartment for a roll or similar supply of transfer strip or carbon paper so'asto rotect the same from dirt and moisture or rom tearing or other injury.
Other objects will be in part pointed out in connection `with the following detailed description and will be in part obvious in connection therewith. l
The invention accordingly comprises the features of construction, combinations of elements, be exemplified in the construction hereinafter set forth and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the claims. Referring to the drawing for a detailed description of the embodiments there shown,
there is represented an autographic register having a casing preferably made of some light, strongI material, such' as sheet metal, which is readily bent and shaped to form thewalls and other parts of the register. Bottom, top, side and end walls are provided, the top wall forming a platen or ywriting table 10. overlying'an interior compartment adapted for the reception of a supply of record strip 11 which' may be in the form of a zigzag supply pack 12 indicated in. dot and dash outline in Fig.. 1. The casing may be made so light and small as to be rea ily ortable or capable of being carried in one and whilel the other hand makes an entry upon a record strip carried by the register.
A passageway 1s provided at one end of the means of a spring 15. The supply pack in horizontal dimension is; practically equal to that of the interior compartment, being retained at the forward end of the compartment by a flange 13 upturned from the bottom plate of the register. The door 13 preferably terminates short of the top wall or writing table 10 leaving a slot or opening 16 for passage of the transfer strips 11 from the interior compartment tothe overlying writing table.
At a point near to the slot 16 atthe forward end of the register, the writing table 10 is provided with a downturned iange 17 preferably inwardly inclined and forminga transverse edge or apex over which the strips 11 pass. This edge forms a guide over which the strips turn in their passage from the cornpartment to the writing table. The upper edge of the door forms a guide for the strips prior to reaching the transverse apex formed by the fiange 17 and a second guide for the strips is positioned beyond said apex, being formed by a transverse plate 18 secured to the register and spaced slightly above the writing table 10.
At the rear end of the writing table is a pivoted clamping plate 19 overlying the strips 11 and adapted to Contact therewithto hold them in correct position on the writing table, said plate having angularly disposed depending supporting arms 'pivoted to the sides of the register, one of said arms having an ydisposed at one side of the outwardly extending flange forming a lug 20 for manual operating of the clamping plate. The clamping plate is preferably spring pressed downwardly into clamping position, and when the strips are fed forwardly, the forward edge of the clamping plate functions as a tearing edge across which the projecting stri p ends may be severed.
The writing table 10 is provided with a notch 21 underlying the clamping plate 19 whereby the ends of the record strips 11 may be grasped to feed them forward manually after severance of the projecting strip ends.
The end wall is similarly notched under the notch 21 as at 21.
There may be several superposed record strips 11 each being preferably provided with blank forms and having apertures 22 for filing the severed sheets as upon filing pins or the like.
Transfer strips, such 'for example as carbon paper strips 23, may be disposed between adjacent record strips over the writing table so as to transfer to the lower record strips the record made ulpon the uppermost record strip by writing t ereon. For housing and protecting a supply roll 24 of transfer strips a housing and support 25 is provided, being writing table and extending longitudinally of the register. A simple and effective construction for this housing is disclosed, including a plate 26' vwhich may as shown be integral with the side plate 27 of the register, being bent into tubular or cylindrical form to provide a compartment for the roll of transfer strip. The plate 26 is discontinuous at the upper side of the tubular housing providing an opening for the reception of the roll and through which the strips extend to writing position over the writing tabled The end walls 28 of the housing 25 are preferably integral at one edge thereof with the side wall 26 abutting or overlapping, at other edges thereof, the .ends of the side wall of the housing, as show in Fig. 5. A cover 29 is provided for the housing opening conforming substantially to the housing contour, being substantially cylin-v drical and mounted upon the housing for rotation on its longitudinal axis and sliding over the wall 26 of the housing to close and open said housing, as best seen in Figs. 3 and 4. The cover 29 is substantially co-extensive longitudinally with the side walls, being pro vided at its ends with inturned annular flanges which frictionally engage the end walls 28 of the housing. In order to further assure the retention of the closure 29 in closed position, a friction catch 31 is provided which may be struck up from the surface of the housing wall, lying in position to engage the lower edge of the closure 29, (see Fig. 3), thusholding the closure in closed position. It will therefore be seen that the closure 29 is retainedy with its upper edge in engagement with the transfer strips'23 extending from the housing so as to tightly clamp them in position over the writing table.
InFig. 7 is shown a modification of the housing construction for the transfer strip supply in which the cover 29a 1s provide with end walls 32 overlapping the end walls 28a of the tubular housing and being pivoted thereto by pivot pins 33. The end walls 28a and 32 are held in close frictional engagement thereby tending to hold the cover in close position.
A clamp is provided on the side of the register opposite to the transfer strip housing 25 for holding the free ends of the carbon strips 23, being illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 as a clamping plate 34 pivoted at 35 to the register and spring pressed into clamping position 'by springs 36. The upper edge of the clamping plate is slightly inwardly inclined and offset so as to grip the strips 23 against the side of the register. A flange 37 is bent outwardly from the body of the plate 34 under which the free ends of the transfer strips 23 may extend. The outer edge of this flange may be employed as a tearing edge for severing the excess free ends of the transfer strips,l and furthermore said flange may be employed as an operating handle for drawing the clamping plate 34 away from clamping position. The flange 37 also serves as a reinforcing and rigidifying rib for the clamping warping thereof.

The ends o'f the transfer strips are placed under the clamping bar 38 which is then moved to closed in itskeeper 40, as shokwn, thus clamping the ends of the strip tightlyagainst the side of the register.
Since certain changes may be made in the above construction" and differentv embodiments of the invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the' above description or shown in the accompanying drawing f shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
It is also to be understood that'the following claimsv are intended to cover all of the generic and specific features of the invention herein decribed, yand all statements of the scope of the invention which, as a matter of language, might be said to'fall therebetween.

In an autographic register, in combination, a tubular casing for a transfer strip supply mounted upon the register and having a cylindrical wall and spaced ends, said Wall being discontinuous to provide an opening in the side of the housing for the reception of the transfer strip supply, and a cylindrical cover for said opening having its edge positioned to contact with the transfer strip extending from said housing to hold said strip in operative position.

In an autographic register, in combination, a tubular housing for a transfer strip supply including a plate securedl at one edge to thel register and being bent to provide a compartment with a receiving opening at one side and a cover for said opening rotatably mounted upon said housing to cover and uncover said opening and having an edge positioned to contact with and grip the transfer strip extending from said housing'` to hold said strip in operative position.

In an autographic register, in combination, a strip clamp having a clamping surface for engaging a strip in clamping relation, said clamp being in the form of a plate having an integral portion thereof, intermediate its edges bent outwardly to form a tearing edge positioned to tear a strip so as to leave a strip end in position to be grasped when the clamp is in clamping position.

In an autographic register, in combination, a Writing table, a spring pressed clamp positioned against the side of the register and pivotally mounted at its lower edge below said Writing table, said clamp having a contact part at one edge thereof to engage and clamp a transfer strifp, and an outstanding angularly disposed ange on intermediate said contact part and the pivotal mounting thereof, said outstanding flan e forming a severing member for the trans er strip.
