This invention relates tothe-manufacture of pipe molds, and more particularly socket pi e molds used for casting pipes by the centrifugal method. More specifically, the inl vention comprises improved means for the compression of sand in a suitable flask in one piece, the primary object of the invention being to provide for an appartus adapted to work in a rapid and reliable manner, and to deliver pipe molds in which the sand is roperl compressed in all parts of the mol he characteristic features of the iniproved apparatus will be specified in the following description and more fully pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings which are given solely by way of example:
Fig. 1 is a general elevational view of the apparatus.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section on a larger scale 4through the lower portion of the apparatus, the parts being shown in the position they assumed before clamping the flask in position.
Fig. 3 is a view corresponding toFig. 2 showing the position of the parts during the sand filling.
In the form of construction herein represented, the tubular {lasks 1 (Fig. 2) comprise a tubular body, an upper head la and a lower head 1b. They are provided at the centre with a supporting sleeve 2 (Fig. 1) carrying trunnions 3 by which they can be taken up from the horizontal position by a hoisting apparatus and placed in the vertical position on a rotatable frame 4. The frame 4 is adapted to receive a certain number of flasks, four for instance, and is rotatably supported upon one of the columns 5 of the packing tower. By rotating the frame 4, the flasks 1 may be successively brought at the centre of the tower, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the top head 1a of the flask to be packed with sand being then exactly below a centering cross-frame 6 provided on the tower and forming an abutment for the flask. Below the lower head 1b 5 of the flask is mounted a double hydraulic press or like apparatus shown in vertical section in Fig. 2, and comprising two pistons 7 and 8. The outer hollow piston 7 is movable in a fixed cylinder 9, to which the power fluid (water, steam, etc.) is admitted at 10, the exhaust being shown at 11. In the piston 7 is movable the inner piston 8, for which the admission'takes place at 26 and the exhaust at 12.
The outer piston 7 carries the pattern 16 for the socket of the pipe, throu h the medium of an annular su port 14, an a cen. tering member 13.y Suitable vibrators 15 are mounted on the latter.
The inner piston 8 carries at the top an abutment or ejector 17 and is adapted to make contact with the lower end 16 of the pattern 16.
The core 18 used for ressin the sand in the cylindrical part of t e mol comprises a cylindrical body provided at its lower end with a cylindrical head or mandrel 20, the cylindrical surfaces of the body and head being connected by a conical surface 18. The diameter D of the head 20 is equal to the 75 outer diameter of the pipe to be cast and and the diameter d of the core body is slightly less. The abutment or ejector 17 on the inner piston 8 is adapted to press upwardly on a stud y2Oa provided on the head 2O.
With the flask 1 in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the fluid is admitted at 10 and raises the piston 7, and the flask is thus centered on the member 13. As the piston continues to rise, the flask is lifted and centered by its upper head 1 in the cross member 6. The core 18 .is then placed within the flask and centered at the to ina removable centering ring 19 and at t e bottom, its head 2O is centere in a corresponding bore of the pattern 16. A

A sand packing ap aratus for socket pipe molds comprising -a ask member and a core for the pipe bod ,a head member for the pipe socket, means or pressing the sand in the body member, said means including a main ramming pattern axially movable lengthwise of the flask member, a movable head pattern for pressin the sand in the head member, a stationary a utment adapted toV engage the end of the flask member opposite carrying a centering member for the socket end of the flask, the head pattern being slidably carried by said centering member whereby it may be moved axially together with said centering member, 'a second power iuid driven piston slidably extending through the first named piston which forms the cylinder for said last named piston and adapted to engage and move said head pattern independently of said centering member.
7. In a sand packing apparatus as claimed in claim 6, the further feature residing in that said first named piston is adapted to draw with it in its forward stroke said last mentioned piston.
8. A sandpacking apparatus as claimed in claim 6, in which the means for moving axially the main ramming pattern includes a. hoisting device, the provision of means adapted to cause said second piston to engage and move axially said main pattern on a determined length prior to engage and move the head pattern.

A sand packing apparatus for socket pipe molds comprising a flask member and a core for the pipe body, a head member for the pipe socket, means for pressing the 'sand in the body member, said means including a main ramming `pattern axially movable lengthwise of the flask member, a movable' head pattern for pressing the sand in the head member, means for moving said head pattern, a stationary abutment adapted to W engage and center the end of theiiask mem` ber op osite the socket, a centeringy piece for the soc et end and means for axially moving lcentering piece flask and head member so as being movable axially, and means for axially r mo ving said centering member together with the head member and the ask so as to center the flask at both ends.
