Description

INVENTOR ATTORNEY R. MUHLICHEN EXTENSION TABLE Fe1a. 24, 1931.
Filed Oct. 16, 1928 Patented Feb. 24, 1931 PATENT OFFICE nunon'r rrnrrmonnn, or nosoxnn, New JERSEY rixrnivsron TABLE Application .fiied October 16, 1928. Serial No. 312,814.
This invention relates to extension tables.
One object of this invention is to provide an extension table in which the extension sections, either singly or in multitude, may be aui tomatically placed by simply pulling the two table sections apart. V l
A further ob]ect of my invention is to provide in combination with such table, means for automaticallyelevating one or more extension sections intolevel position with the table top and to automatically'depress such extension sections by. closing the table sections. it i Another object 'of myinvention is to provide with each extension section, means for supporting it in its elevated position.
{A further object of my invention is" to provide in connection with such table, guide means strengthening the table while in its extended position. i 1 i The foregoing and further objects will be more fully apparent from the follow ng description and the accompanying drawings,
forming part of this disclosure, andin which t Figure 1 represents a preferredembodiment of the upper portion of a table in its closed position, 3 i
, Figure 2 is aside elevation of the upper portion of a table Wit/110116 side extension,
Figure 3 is a similar elevation of such table portion with both sides extended,
F igure '4; is a bottom view of the table in extended position,
Figure 5 is a cross sectional view, taken on line 5-5 of Figure 4,
Figure 6 is a cross sectional view, taken on line 6-6 of Figure 4,
Figure 7 is a detail cross sectional V ew showing the disappearing table top extension support,
Figure 8 is a detail view, partially in cross section of a section elevator, and
Figure 9 represents different cross sectional views of modified table tops and table top extensions. v
- Referring to the figures, numeral 10 denotes the left hand table section and numeral 1 11 the right hand table section. Each of the table sections consists of table tops 12 and 13 and frame members 14 and 15. The latter are provided with longitudinal recesses 16 and 17,*ada-pted to accommodate tabletop extensions 18 and 19 when the table sections are in abutting position.
The underfraines 14: and 15 are connected with each otherby means of rails 20, provided with longitudinal slots 21, which are engaged by pins 22 equally lodged within the frame members, as clearly seen in Figure 7., The center portions of rails 20 are connected at so 23 with substantially I-shaped bridge 2 1 which is supported at its broadened center by means of a central leg 25.
Associated at the side extensions 26 of the I-shapedbridge 2 1 are table extension elevating devices 27, shown in detail in' Figure 8, and consisting of a cylindricalmember 28, in which is mounted a plunger 29 permanently attached to table top extension 19, as indicated at 30. Depending from plunger 29 is a rod 31 at the end of which is provided stop member 32, which limits the upward mov ment of plunger 29. a
Vound about rod 31 and bearing against plunger 29 is an expansion spring 33, adapted 5 to elevate plunger 29 andthereby the extension section 19. These elevating devices 27 are symmetrically arranged relative to the extension sections.
hen one half of the table'is pulled out, as shown in Figure 2, the right hand extension section 19 is released from recess 17 and is propelled upwards by the spring controlled elevators 2'7. When both sections are pulled from each other, section 1.8 and section 19 are elevated into a position level with table tops 12 and 13.
Attached at the bottom faceof each extension section are provided supporting means, indicated at 34and seen in detail in F igure 7 co hose supports consist of a stationary plate 35, provided with hinge 36 to which is connected a leg 37, normally held in place by a spring 38. When this spring is pushed upwards, as indicated by arrow, member 37 will Us. fall by its own weight into the broken line position, describing an arc, indicated by another arrow.
Thebroadened face of leg 37 is adapted to rest against connecting rail 20 above which
