This invention relates to broom holders and lhas as its general object'toprovide a device which may-be suspended or hung'upon a wall or other support and with which the handle oV a broom or the like-'may beconveniently and quickly 'engaged and automatically f "grasped so as. to'befsupportedin suspended Another'object ofthe invention is toprovide a deviceionthel purposestated" which maybemadeffrom, sheet metal blanks at an exceptionally -lowcostfand which will be so simple in its construction jas to adapt it to be manufactured at little expense, the invention contemplating in this'V connection, a hinge connection between the fixed and the movable gripping member of the device Vwhich will consist ofa sheet metal blank properly formed, and which blank will, be anchored withoutthe employment of screws.
This inventiony also consists in certain other correspondingparts throughout'the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a view in front elevation of theY broom holding device embodying the invention, a broom being shown suspended therefrom.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view illustrating the parts in position to clamp a broom handle.
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the device.
Figure 4 is a 'detail sectional viewtaken substantially on the line t4of Figure 3.
The device embodying the invention comprises a fixed handle gripping and supporting member, which is formed from a single sheet metal blank and this member comprises an attaching portion l which is ofY approxiy matelyrectangular form and which is reenforced by overturned anges 2 at'its opposite vertical edges, and provided in its upper l overturned to -providev AAby the numeralfl2.V f r hung upon a nailor thelike, gindicated bythe' 'numeral 4. This, member of the device further comprises a portion 5 which is likewise of rectangularfformfand which is.iuv tegralwith and extends forwardly at right angles from the lower end of the portion 1, v
the said portion 5 therefor'outstanding from the Wall or other; support upon which the portion 1 is suspended.-v The portion 5 isreenforcedl at its lateral" edges. by overturned flanges 'corresponding tothe'ianges 2iipon Y th'eportion 1, andis formed with av centrally located rectangular '.opening, V.indicated the, numeral-7. 'This openingfis 'ofa size greater than the diameter `voan `ordinary opening, and, Iasf best illustratedr infFigures f 3. andlllzof the drawing, ithe forward wall of the opening visV beveled so yastolprovide a sharp biting edge 8and .the deviceifurther kcomprises. a swinging memberv .which Ais .to have gripping` engagement with: that side :.tloffthe. broom handlezopposite 'the' side which L is5ngaged `by thememberl, and'istormedltroni 1 an` integral v.sheet .metal blankfwhich. is fof general rectangular form; except that `in `its Y forward side it is formedfwith a V-shaped re- -cess, indicated' bythe-numeral 11.0 and, at its Yrear' side', is're'cessed; at its :intermediate por A .tion as indicatedby vthenume'ral 11, andfthe 6.5 f broom handle,`and therefo-re,'abroom yhandle v 1 may be inserted iupwardlyl through the said 1 portions at the oppositeisides of the rece'ss'are y pintle lugs indicated These lugs 12 constitute one part ahinge, and the other member of the hinge' is formed from a sheetmetal blank which is ofgeneral rectangularform, and Ywhich is bent to provdei a substantially.'tubular pintlev-lug 18 located .intermediate its two .ends,.the por` tions ofQt-helblank at opposite sides offthe'lug .being broughtfininutualcontact as vat 14, and

The 'portions'jli of the. .blankfbetween thelpintle lug 13"V andr the portions l'and 16 are'fitted through a slot 17 formed substantially aty the told between' the portions land 5 of the -"irst described blank, l portion with an opening 3 whereby it maybe and a pintle pin' 18 -isf-tted through `the' alined pintle lugs 12 and 13, and in this manner the member 9 is hingedly connected with the member 1, it being observed by reference to Figures 1 and `3 of the drawings that the pintle lugs 12 are held in the fold between the` portions 1 and 5 of the first described blank by reason ofthe engagement of the pintle pin therethrough and through the pintle lug 13. A
In order that the member 9 may be caused to normally assume a loweredV position, lyingVU flat upon the upper sidefof the member 5a weightblock 19 is secured-by a rivet or'other; wise to the upper sideof themember 9.rear- Wardly of the V-shaped recess10.
It will be observedzby'reference to the several figures of the drawing that the V-shaped recess is located above the forward portion of the opening 7, and it willbe understood from the foregoing and by reference to the drawinfr g, and particularly Figures 2 and 3, that lwhen the broom handle isV slid upwardly through the opening 7, it will ride not only against the sharpened edge or beveled wall of the opening 7, but also against theside walls of the recess 10 ,in the member 9, and therefore the member9 will be swung upwardly to assume substantially` the position' shown in Figures 2 and 8 of the drawing and, when the broom handle is released, the walls of the recess 10 will engage the rear side of the broom vhandle at spaced points, and as .Y
device, to insert the handle of the broom upe wardly through the opening 7 in the member 5 and then release the handle. What I claim is Y f 1. A broom holder comprising a fixedimember including a suspension portion and a portion extending at right angles thereto, the last mentioned portion' being provided with an opening to accommodate the handle of a broom, and the front wall of the opening be- 1,79e,sao

Y 2. A broom holder comprising a fixed'member including a suspension portion and a portion extending at lright angles thereto, the last mentioned portion being yprovided with an opening to accommodate the handle of a broom', and the front wall of the opening being straight and beveled to provide a biting edge, a member hinged in the angle between the iii-st and second fmentioned portions of thefirst mentioned member and designed, by gravity, to assume a position resting upon the ,upperfside of the second mentioned portion of the first mentioned member, the said last mentioned member being provided with a V-shaped recess to engage that side of a broom handle opposite the side engaged by the forward wall ofthe opening in the second men Y tioned portion ofthe first4 mentioned meinber, vthe recess in the second mentioned memberhaving relatively converging beveled side walls, whereby to provide for a three point engagement of the gripping portions of the two members, with the broom handle.
In testimony whereof Iaffix my signature.
