CABLE CUTTER Application filed October 2, 1929.
This invention relates to improvements in cutters, particularly to a cable cutter, and it is the principal object of my invention to provide a cutter for the leaden mantles of cables preventing damage to the cable wires and injury to the workmen.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a cable cutter allowing a convenient adjustment of the rollers carrying the cutter knives to the respective cable thickness.
Still another object of my invention is the provision of a cable cutting device of comparatively simple and therefore inexpensive construction, yet durable and eflicient in its operation.
A further object of my invention is the pro vision of a cable cutter equipped with a suitable frame having a handle for the convenient manipulation of the device.
A still further object of my invention is the provision of a cable cutter, the knife carrying rollers of which are arranged on shafts j ournaled in bearings which can be adjusted in vertical direction to suit the distance between the knives to the thickness of the lead cable mantle to be out.
These and other objects and advantages of my. invention will become more fully known as the description proceeds and will then be specifically defined in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawing, forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a cable cutting device constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof.
Fig. 8 is a rear end view of the cable cutter. Fig. 4 is a section on line 4l4 of Figure 3. As illustrated my cable cutter comprising a frame 10 having a rear wall 11, two preferably steel rollers 13 and 14 are arranged on shafts 15 and 16 respectively so as to rotate in opposite directions. These rollers are thicker at their ends and have a reduced central diameter.
The rollers carry each two knives 17 and 18 one on each side of their central part, keyed thereto as at 19.
The ends of shafts 15 and 16 are journaled in bearings 20, 21, respectively, through which 59 are guided two threaded vertical rods 22, and
Serial No. 396,707.
23, respectively having an upper part formed with left hand thread and a lower part provided with right hand thread and held in the bottom bar of frame 11 and extending with their upper ends above the upper bar of frame 11 where they carry adjusting Wing or other nuts 24:, 25, respectively. The rollers are held on their shafts by means of set screws 26 or the like.
The operation of my device will be readily 60 understood from the above description and simultaneous inspection of the drawing, and it will be clear that the distance between the rollers and their knives may be suitably adjusted by the proper operation of nuts 24:, 25, to suit the respective thickness of the leaden cable mantle to prevent cutting of the wires therein.
It will be understood that I have described one form of my invention only and that I may (0 make such changes therein as come within the scope of the appended claim without departure from the spirit of my invention.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In a cable cutter of the class described, a frame, a front handle therefor, a rear frame integral with said frame, bearings in said rear frame, shafts journalled in said bearings, rollers having larger end diameters and a smaller centre diameter on said shafts, a pair of knives on each roller, one on each side of the center thereof, and means for adjusting the distance between said knives to suit the thickness of the lead mantle of a cable to be cut to prevent cutting of the core wires.
In witness whereof I have signed my name WILLY GROTE.
to this specification.
