My invention relates to flexible car roofs wherein metal roof sheets are loosely secured to the car and to each other by` seam covers that permit relative movement of the sheets to a limited extent so as to be able to accommodate themselves to the distortions of the car body.
The principal Aobject of the present invention is to provide means for preventing water and light from entering the car through the eaves ends of the roof seams.V Other objects are simplicity, cheapness of construction and eompactness 0f design.
The invention consists in the eaves flashing and in the construction, combinations and .ar, rangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

My inventionis applicable to metal roofs for cars having` either wood or metal frame members of any suitable construction. Referring to Figs. l to 4, inclusive, my invention is shown in connection with a roof substructure comprising metal lZ'bar side platesl that are connected by metal carlinesQ of substantially invertedchannel-shaped section with outwardly progecting base flanges 3 at the bottoms of their side walls. plates l are arranged with their webs horizontally and with one flange 4 in andextending upwardly. As shown in the'drawings, each end of a carline 2 is rigidly securedpto an adjacent side plate 1 by meansfof an angleshaped carline bracket 5, the two flanges of which are riveted one to the undersides of the baseflange 3 of said carline and the other to the inner face of the upstanding inner flange 4 of said side plate.

At the eaves of the car, the roof sheets 6 are remov-l ably supported onmetal side fascia members 8 of substantially T-shaped cross-section that extend longitudinally of the side plates with their stems rigidly secured flatwise to the upstanding inner flange 4 thereof and with their flanges disposed uppermost and supporting the eaves ends ofthe roof sheets.
` The sheet supporting flanges of the T`shaped side fascia members slope crosswise of said members at. an angle corresponding to the slope of the roof sheets.
The roof sheets are provided at their eaves ends with depending flanges 9 that overhang and arev spaced from the outer edges of the top flanges of the side fascia members. The roof sheets are provided with upwardlyoffset side marginal portions 10 that are inclined upwardly and terminate' in upstanding side marginal flanges l1 that extend substantially from end to end of the sheets andv arespaced away from the adjacent sidewalls of the carlines. Y
Weatherproofing members in the form of inverted channel-shapedV seam covers l2 straddle the carlines and the upstanding side marginal seam flanges 11 of adjacent roofv sheets, the side walls of said seam coversand said seam flanges being normally spaced apart throughout their length. The tops of the ,seam covers bear flatwise against-'the topsof theacarlines and are riveted or otherlwise rigidly secured thereto adj acent to the ridge andV eaves. The seam covers 12 are provided along the lower edges of their side walls with outstanding base flanges 13 that conform to the slope of the upwardly ofliset side marginal portions of the roof sheets and are arranged to rest or bear flatwise on said portions, thereby holding the roof sheets down on the car. The eaves end portions of the seam covers are provided with depending eaves flanges 14E which overhang and are spaced from the end portions of the depending eaves flanges 9 of adjacent sheets.
ln 'order to prevent water and light from entering the car at the eaves ends of the seams and carlines and thus damaging the lading, metal eaves flashing members A are mounted on the car substructuie adjacent the eaves ends of the seams. As shown in Fig. l, cach of these eaves flashings comprises a rectangular base portion 15 provided at its outer or eaves end with a depending flange 16, which is bent inwardly at its lower en'd, and along its side margins with upstanding flanges 17. The base portion 15 of the eaves flashing A is also provided intermediate its upstanding side marginal flanges 17 with an upstanding hood portion 18 which extends from the inner end of' said base portion to the depending flange 16 at the outer end thereof. The top of the hood portion 1S slopes downwardly from the inner end thereto to a point adjacentto the outer end thereof where it is curved downwardly and merges into the plane of said base portion where it is turned downto forml the depending end flange 1G, thus closing the outer end of said hood portion. The inner margin ot the base portion 15 of the eaves flashing is provided with upstanding flanges 19 that are of the same depth as the side flanges 17 and extend from said side flanges to the sides of the hood portion 18.
The flashing member A is positioned on the car substructure with its hood portion 18 straddling the end portion of a carline 2, with its base portion 15 resting on the sheet supporting flange of the side fascia member 8 and extending inwardly above the base flanges 3 of said carline and beneath the upwardly oflset side marginal portions 10 of adjacent root sheets, and with its depending eaves flanges 16 hooked beneath the outer edge ot said sheet supporting flange.
By the arrangement described, any water that climbs over the eaves end portions ot the side seam flanges of the roof sheets drains into the pan-shaped base portions of the eaves flashings and is discharged over the side of the car. The eaves flashings also serve as shields to cut down the amount of light which may enter the car through the eaves end of the seams. In the modified forni of flashing shown in` Figs. 5 to 7, inclusive, the entry of light in the car is further prevented by the extensions or wings 23 of the main hood flashing, which bear against the opposite sides of the carline and the inner tace of the side plate.
In Figs. 5 to 7, inclusive, a modified form of eaves flashing is shown which is adapted for a car having a wooden side plate 1a, side sheathing boards 2() secured to the outer face of said side plate, and a side fascia board 8a extending longitudinally of' the car at the upper ends of said side sheathing boards. In the construction of the car, the eaves ends of the roof saoets are supported on the tops ot the side plate, side sheathing boards, and sid-e fascia board, and the ends of the carlines Qa are seated in notc` es 21 in the tops of the side plates and have depending end flanges 22 that are bolted to the outer side faces of the side plates. The arrangement of root sheets and seam covers is the same as that shown in n 1 to 3, inclusive. The modified eaves flashing shown in Figs. 5 t-o 7, inclusive, comprises a hood flashing A1 which substantially the saine as the hood flashhown in li, except that the dependiange 16a at the outer end of the modified hing is not bent inwardlj, as shown in e. The modified eaves flashing is positioned on the car with its hood portion covering the end of the carline, with its base portion resting on the tops of the side plate, sheathing and fascia, and erending beneath the raised side margins ot adjacent roof sheets, and with its depending flange 16a nailed to the outer face of the side fascia board 8a. T he extensions or wings 23 at the inner end of the hood flashing A1 are disposed on opposite sides of the carline 2a with the upstanding flanges Q/l at their adjacent ends bearing against the side walls of said carline. The depending outside marginal flanges of the extensions Q3 bear flatwise against the inner face of the wood side plate 1a and are secured thereto preferably by nails.
Obviously, the hereinlfefore described censtruction admits of considerable modification without departing from the invention. rilierefore, l do not wish to be limited to the precise arrangements shown and described.

1. A car root having substructure including carlines, roof sheets arranged between cai-lines and supported at their eaves ends on said substructure, said sheets being provided along their side margins with upstanding flanges, seam covers straddling the carlines and adjacent roof sheet flanges, and an eaves ashino' supported on said 'substructure adjacent to the eaves corners of adjacent sheets, said Yeaves flashing comprising a hood portion adapted to straddle the end of a carline and a base portion resting on said substructure and extending on opposite sides of the carline beneath the eaves corners of adjacent sheets.
2. A car roof having a substructure including carlines, roof sheets arranged between carlines and supported at their eaves ends on said substructures, said sheets being provided along their side margins with upstanding flanges, seam covers straddling the carlines and adjacent roof sheet flanges, and an eaves flashing supported on said substructure adjacent the eaves corners of adjacent sheets, said eaves flashing having'a hood portion adapted to straddle the end of the carline and a base portion resting on said substructure and extending on opposite sides of the carline beneath the eaves corners of adjacent sheets, said base portion being provided with a depending flange adapted to overhang the eaves edge of the substructure.
3. A car roof having a substructure including carlines, roof sheets arranged between carlines and supported at their eaves ends on said substructure, said sheets being provided along their side margins with upstanding seam flanges, seam covers stradding the carlines and adjacent roof sheet flanges, and an eaves flashing supported on said substructure adjacent the eaves corners of adjacent sheets, said eaves flashing having a hood portion adapted to straddle the end of the carline and a base portion resting on said Ysubstructure and extending on opposite'sides of the carline beneath the eaves cornersV of adjacent sheets,
said base portion being provided with upstanding flanges along its inner and end margms. v

A car roof -having asubstructure including carlines, roof sheets arranged between carlines'and -supported at their eaves ends on said "substructurepsaid sheets being provided along their side margins with'up standingflanges, seam coversstraddling the carlines and roof sheet flanges, and an eaves flashing supported on a substructure adjacent the eaves corners of adjacent sheets, said eaves flashing having a hood portion adapted to straddle the end of the carline and a base portion resting on said substructure and eX- tending on opposite sides of the carline beneath the eaves corners of adjacent sheets, and Wing members lsecured to the inner corners of said flashing member, said members being provided Vwith flanges Vadapted to bear against the side walls Aof the carline and dependingflanges adapted to be secured yto the substructure.

A car roof comprising side'plates, carlines connecting said side plates, side lfascia members secured to said side plates, roof sheets arranged between carlines and'supported at their'eaves ends on said side fascia -members, said sheets beingprovided along their side margins with upstanding flanges, seam covers straddling the carlines and roof sheet flanges, and eaves flashings supported on said side fascia members adjacent to the eaves corners of adjacent sheets, each of said eaves flashings having a hood portion adapted to straddle the end of' a carline and a base portion resting on the fascia member extending on opposite sides of said carlines beneath the eaves corners of adjacent sheets.

A car roof comprising side plates, car lines connecting said side plates, side fascia members secured to said side plates, roofV sheets arranged between carlines and supported at their eaves ends on said side plates, said sheets being provided along their side margins with upstanding flanges, seam covers straddling the carlines and adjacent roof sheet flanges, and eaves flashings supported on said side plates adjacent to the eaves corners of adjacent sheets, each of said eaves flashings having a hood portion adapted to straddle the end of a carline and a base portion resting on the side plate and extending on opposite sides of said carline beneath the eaves corners of adjacent sheets, and wing members secured to the inner corners of said flashing member, said wing members being provided with flanges that bear against the side walls Y of said carline and depending flanges that are secured to the inner face of the side plate.
8. A metalreaves flashing comprising a base portion provided with flanged ends and an upstanding hood portion intermediate said ends, said base portion being also provided along its outer edge with a depending flange.

A metal eaves flashing comprising a base portion provided with flanged end margins and an upstanding hood portion intermediate said fianged end margins, said base portion being also provided along its outer edge With a depending flange and along its inner edge with upstanding flanges that extend from the end marginal fianges to the hood portion.

A metal eaves flashing Comprising a hase portion provided With flanged end margins and an npstanding hood portion intermediate said flanged end margins, said base portion being also provided along` its outer edge with a depending flange and along its inner edge with upstanding flanges that extend from the end marginal flanges to the hood portion, and Wing members secured to the inner corners of the base portion of said flashing, said extensions having flanged edges disposed parallel to and hearing against the side Walls of the hood portion of said flashing and depending lianges disposed parallel to the depending flange at the outer edge of said flashing.
