. The main object of this invention is to provide a pipe reamer which is fitted securely.
at the base of the bowl and is self-contained in the pipe.
Another object of the invention is to pro.-
vide a reamer for pipes; the'reamer-being secured at the lower end of the bowl when inactive and being adapted to be fed upwardly to remove any carbon or sediment adhering to the surface of the bowl upon manipulation of a feeder stem. Y.
The above and other objects will become apparent in the-description below in which characters of reference' refer to vlike-named parts in the drawing. v
Referring briefly to the drawing, Figure 1 is a longitudinal, sectionahelevational view of a pipe section showing the reamer applied thereto. Y y Y Figure 2 is a top plan view of Figure 1. Figure 3 is a front elevational view of the reamer feed stem.
Figure 4 is a partially sectioned elevational view of a modified type of reamer which may be ap lied for surfacing the bowl of the pipe.
Rev erring in detail tothe drawing, the numeral V10 indicates the body of a smoking pipe. This bod has a suction stem 11V extending radially t erefrom. v Within the suction stem, a channel 12 is formed which communicates with the bowl 13 in the body of the pipe. The
bowl is substantially cylindrical in cross-section and it is the purpose of the reamer fitted to the pipe toV scrape the surface of the bowl and remove any sediment' therefrom. v
A nipple comprisinggalflange 14 and two threaded sleeves 15 and'16 projectszfrom opposite sides of the flange V14. The' externally socket of the reamer 17. Y This threaded socket, indicated by the numeral 18, in the modified form of reamer illustrated in Figure 4,
. is applied to the construction of both the modified andpreferred form of reamer together with a threaded hole 19 whichcom- PATENT- Q'FHCE municates with the threaded socket 18illustrated in Figure V4. The periphery of the pre; ferred type of reamer 17 has cutting teeth '20 applied to its surface-it being noted that the periphery is conicalin outline. The sleeve 15 of the nipple is provided with a reduced opening 21 'through which the stem 22 vof a Vfeeder r'od is inserted. This stem 22,A at itseXtreinity, is provided with, a reduced threaded proj ection 23fwhich is adapted to engage'the threads in thehole 19 ofthe reamer. `The feeding rod hashinged, -foldable wings 24 pivotally secured-thereto which wings `are adapted to be engaged by .the fingers when manipulating Ithereamer longitudinally in the bowl 13. In
thev modified formvof reamer shown in Figure 4, triangular teeth 25 are formed on the marginaled'ge of one face. Thesleeve 16 is pro- Yvidedwith a Asubstantially secured passageway 26 whichserves as a socket for a wrench endwhen securing the nipple `in place inthe pipebody.` V l "The preferredtype of reamer illustrated in Figure-1 and the Amodified type illustrated inFi'gureL4 are identicaleXcept for the' fact that the preferred forr'n Vhas .teethlformed on the peripheralV surface while, in the modified form, the teeth are provided on one face. TheV outlines of theseforms areidentic'al andthe means of lsecuringlthe reamer tothe sleevel and to the feeding'rodare thesame."t vWhen thereameris not Vtoghe used, it sits Vat the lower base end of the bo-wl '13 with the threaded socket receiving the end of the sta- I tionaryV sleeve' `section 16.; Y When itV is desired toscrape the surface of Vthe-bowl 13, the
threaded 'projection 23"`andv the stem 22 are insertedjinto the opening 21 inthe sleeve vsection 15 .and slidjupwardlyuntilthe pro-` feeding the reamer upwardly, the conical teeth 20 or the teeth 25 in the modified form will engage and scrape the surface of the bowl 13 free of any accumulated carbon sediment adhering to its surface. After the scraping operation has been completed the reamer is again lowered by extending the stem 22 out of the guide opening 2l and, after rotation has been completed, the reamer 17 finds it is again in engagement with the' sleeve 16.
It is to be noted that certain changes in form and construction may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
l. In a smoking pipe having a bowl therein, a cutting disk movable in said bowl, a nipple stationary in said pipe, means for attaching said cutting disk to said nipple through rotation of said disk, and means for feeding said disk upwardly in said bowl. p 2. In a smoking pipe having a bowl therein, an annular cutting disk, a threaded nipple stationary in said pipe projecting into said bowl, said nipple being adapted to engage said cutting disk when the latter is inactive, and means for detaching said disk from said nipple.
3. In a smoking pipe having a bowl therein, a toothed annular disk movable in said bowl, a stationary nipple in said pipe projecting into said bowl, said cutting disk having a socket therein receiving said nipple when said disk is inactive, an independent means adapted to pass through said nipple and engage said ,cutting disk for detaching said cutting disk from said nipple and rotate said disk.
t. In ,a smoking pipe having a bowl therein, a toothed annular disk movable in said bowl and having a threaded hole therein, a stationary nipple in said pipe projecting into said bowl, said cutting disk having a socket therein receiving said nipple When said disk is inactive, and means engaging said threaded hole for detaching said disk from said nipple.
5. In a smoking pipe having a bowl therein, a toothed annular disk movable in said bowl and having a threaded hole therein, a stationary nipple in said pipe projecting into said bowl, said cutting disk having a socket therein receiving saidnipple when said disk is inactive, a guide opening in said nipple, an
independent slidable means in said guide opening engaging the hole in said disk for detaching saidA disk from said nipple.
G. In a smoking pipe having a bowl therein, a toothed annular disk movable in said bowl and having a threaded hole therein, a stationary nipple in said pipe projecting into said bowl, said cutting disk having a socket therein receiving said nipple when said disk is inactive, a guide opening in saidnipple,
