7 My invention relates to reenforcing means for metallic doors, and, more particularly to metal doors of the type disclosed in my co pending application, Serial Number 259,192, 1

A still further object of the invention is the provision of reenforcing means for metallic doors which possess advantages in points of simplicity and eiiiciency, and, at the same time proves itself comparatively inexpensive in cost of manufacture. V

A door such as above described and dis closed in my above referred to co-pending 3 plication, is 7 not snfiiciently interiorly strengthened to positively prevent variations in gauge or thickness of'thestile and cross.- rail sectionsfat their inner edges adjacent the outer edge of the integral molding relative to the outer edges thereof, or at intermediate points due to the fact that each door plate is formed from a single sheet of metal by a stamping or drawing operation. In order to further secure and maintain a uniform and even gauge, or thickness through the stile and cross-rail sections of the door, I provide transversely disposed ireenforcing view through the door, taken on'line 22 of V Fili guy or bracing means for each stile and cross-rail section of the door. Each reenforcing, or bracing means comprises a pair of like metallic bracing members 9 and each bracing member is provided with a base or foot 10 at their outer edges and they are disposed at a right angle to the like bracing members 9. The inner edge of each bracing member 9 is folded over, as at 11, to provide the flanges 12 and the channels 18 between the flanges and their respective bracing members. A metallic key member, or keeper 1a made from a single strip of metal, is so shaped by folding its edge port-ions under as tovprovide a pair of flanges 15, the channels 16 and a gap 17 between the ends of the flanges The key member 14 is adapted to be slidably mounted upon the bracing members 9 with the flanges 12 of the bracing members receivable in the channels 16 of the key member i l, and the flanges 15 of the key member 1a receivable in the channels 13 of the bracing members. The folded ends 11 of the bracing members are preferably in contact with each other and receivable in the gap 17 of the key member for establishing a frictional interlocking connection between the bracing members and the key member to prevent spreading, or contracting of the bracing members when so interlocked, thus preventing variations in thickness of the crossrail and stile sections of the door at their inner edges relative to their outer edges, as is manifest.
In practice, there is a bracing member 9 secured to each stile section i and to each cross-rail section 5 of each door plate 6, before the two door plates have been welded to the facing or edging member 1 and before the key member 1 1 has been applied to the bracing members 9. The key members let are applied to the bracing members 9 before the plates 6 are welded to the facing member 1. The key members 14 which co-act with the bracing members 9 secured to the cross-rail sections 5 are preferably, although not necessarily, each provided with the flat end extensions 18 which are adapted to be bent over for contact with the key members l l, which connect the bracing members 9 that are secured to the stile sections 4 of the doorto prevent possible longitudinal movement of any of the four key members employed hence eliminating the possibility of any rattle developing within the door by the shifting of the key members 1d upon the respective bracing members. The location of each bracing member 9 is at, or adjacent the junction of the inner edges of the stile sections and cross-rail sections with the outer edges of the integral molding section 3. The base portion 10 of each bracing mem her 9 is secured to the inner face of its respective door plate 6 by a suitable welding operation such for instance as indicated by the spot welds 19, but it is evident that the bracing members 9 may be secured to the one piece door plates 6 by roll welding.
When it is desired to assemble the door the one piece door plates 6 are first connected by applying a keeper 1a to each pair of bracing members 9, of which there are a pair for each stile and each cross-rail of the door. The door plates 6 having been thus first connected, the stile and rail sections of each door plate can be then welded to the facing or edging member 1.
It will be apparent from the foregoing description that I provide a cheap and simple internal reenforcement for the inner edges of the stiles and cross-rails to prevent bulg- 1 or sinking of the stiles and cross-rails adthe outer er of the molding formed egral with the s iles, cross-rails and the a of the door due to the fact that noldzg, stiles and cross-rails are s being integrally formed bent of metal by a drawing or ion, as distinguished from a ing means above described could be used metallic door structures, stiles and crossils are formed independent of each other well as independent of the panel, and in door structures where the panel, stiles and cross-rails are formed from single sheets, with the cross-rails split at their juncture with the stiles, it is especially applicable to three piece metal door structure, wherein :he panel section, molding section, stile sec- "-ions and cross-rails sections are all formed rom a single stamping without any seam apearing between the cross-rail sections and he stile sections and without any seam apiearing between the panel sections and moldng sections and the stile and cross-rail secions.
The many advantages of the herein described invention will readily suggest themselves to those skilled in the art to which it appertains.
From the foregoing description, it is evident that a simple device for this purpose has been disclosed, but it is to be understood that I do notdesire to restrict, or limit myself to the very details of the construction shown and described, which is merely illustrative, it being obvious that changes, not involving the exercise of invention, may be made without conflicting or departing from the spirit of the invention within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. In combination with an all metal door embodying a channel edge facing member and side plates wherein the stiles, the cross rails, moulding and panels are integrally for interlocking engagement with the folded side edges of the opposed angle bars and 'mate midway the space between the side plates of the door, a slidable metallic lock strip having folded side edges adapted to interlock with the folded side edges of the opposed angle bars for uniting them to prevent separation of the angle bars relative to each other and a tongue directed from each end of the locking strip adaptedto be bent at a right angle to the looking strip to arrest longitudinal displacement of the locking strip mounted upon the folded side edges of the angle bars.
2. Internal bracing for the cross-rail and stile sections of metal side plates for all metal doors adjacent mouldings integral with the cross-rails andlstile sections comprising an angle bar secured to the inner face of the stile sections of each side plate, one arm of each angle bar being folded along its side edge and adapted to contact with its mate midway the space between the two side plates of the door, a metallic lock strip-having folded over edges adapted for interlocking engagement with folded side edges of the opposed angle bars, an angle bar secured to the inner face of the upper and lower cross-rail of each side plate, one arm of each angle bar being folded along its side edge and adapted to contact with its mate, a metallic locking strip having folded over side edges adapted tongues directed from the ends of the latter 7 locking strips,said tongues adapted to be bent into engagement with the first mentioned locking strips to prevent longitudinal displacement of all thelocking strips upon the folded side edges of their respective angle bars.
