According to one feature of the present invention novel means for mounting the presser foot are provided by which the adj ustment of the presser foot is facilitated and ready access may be had to the mounting. In the illustrated machine the presser foot is supported from below and projects above the surface of the work table so that it may be caused to extend through an opening in the work. Its support comprises a block vertically adjustable in a lug depending from the work table and a carrier pivoted to the block, the presser foot being adjustably mounted upon the carrier. Adjusting screws for the block and for the carrier provide ready means for adjusting the presser foot vertically and angularly to vary the characteristics of the scarf produced; and the presser foot may be adjusted'upon the carrier to bring it into the desired relation to the end of the feed roll. In order that all the parts of the presser foot mounting may be readily accessible for repair or replacement, the table above mentioned is mounted upon an auxiliary frame of the machine which is pivoted about a vertical axis to the main frame of the machine. Whenever, then, it is desired to expose the presser foot mounting to view, it is necessary merely to swing out this auxiliary frame.
These and other features of the invention including certain details of construction and combinations of parts will be described as embodied in an illustrated machine and pointed out in the appendedclaims.
Referring now to the accompanying draw- Fig. 1 is a perspective of a machine which the present invention is embodied,

Fig. 4 is a view partly in section and partly in elevation of the presser foot and, its mounting, and
Fig. 5 is a perspective of the presser foot and its mounting.
The machine is of a well-known type which comprises a cylindrical skiving knife 7 a feed roll 9 which extends somewhat into the open end of the knife, and a presser foot 11 which holds the work down upon the feed roll and by its shape and posit-ion determines the characteristics of the scarf produced. The feed roll and the knife are rotated continuously through suitable connections by a driving pulley 13. The roll is fast to a shaft which is rotatably mounted in bearings carried by an auxiliary frame 15 which is pivoted to the main frame 17 about a vertical stud 19 so that this auxiliary frame may be swung away from the main frame to expose the roll and the knife. The feed roll is normally held in the position shown by springs and is capable of yielding downwardly and of tilting about an axis which is transverse to its axis of rotation. When a scarf of a given inclination is desired, the presser foot is adjusted into the proper position, and then as the work passes over the roll and beneath the presser foot, the roll yields.
Except for the shape of the feed roll and the construction and mounting of the presser foot, the machine as thus far described is of well-known construction and is or may be substantially the same as that shown in Letters Patent of the United States No. 1,301,283, granted April 22, 1919, upon an application filed in the name of Albert Latham. The mountin s of the roll and the knife, the mechanisms for driving them, and the various other features, which are or may be the same as those of the machineillustrated in the Letters Patent referred to, will, therefore, not be described in detail, reference being made to the patent.
Mounted in the top of the auxiliary frame 15 is a plate 21, having a convex upper surface the curvature of which corresponds-approximately to that of the edge of the knife 7, this plate being adjustable toward and from the feed roll and being held in adjusted position by a screw 23 which passes through a slot in the plate and is threaded into the member 15. Thisplate 21 may be considered to be the work table since the portion of the work which is being skived at anygiven moment is being supported by it. 1n the operationof the machine the work, such as a piece of leather 100 (Fig. 2), is fed over the plate 21 and thence between the roll and the presser foot to the knife.
Formed on the forward end of the plate is a depending lug having a vertical undercut guideway 25 (Fig. 5); and vertically adjustable in this guideway is ablock 27, said block being adjusta-blyheld in position by a screw 29 which is threaded into the depending lug and has a collar 31 extending into a horizontal groove in the block. Pivoted to this block about the axis of a screw 33 is a carrier 35 for the-presser foot 11, the screw being'threadedinto the block 27 and having an otherwise smooth stem about which the carrier 35 may freely turn. In order to permit adjustment of the carrier about the axis of the screw and to hold the carrier in adjusted angular position, a screw 37 is threaded into a lugon the block 27 and has a collar 39 which extends into a groove ll in the carrier. Threaded into the under side of the carrier 35 is a small straight rod 43; and threaded into the under side of the block 27 is .a bent rod 45, said rods being connected by a tension spring 47, the purpose of this construction being to take up any backlash between the collar 39 and the upper wall of the groove 41. The presser foot 11 is adjustably mounted upon the carrier 35 by meansof a rib 49 on its under side which is received in a groove in the upper face of the carrier. A set screw 51, which passes loosely through a slot in the presser foot and is threaded into the carrier 35, holds the presser foot in adjusted position with respect to the carrier. I11 order to cover up certain parts, which might offer obstructions to the passage of the work from the plate 21 to the knife 7, and at the same time to leave the effective portion of the feed roll exposed, there are fastened to the top of cal'roll, the work-engaging portion of the roll being the narrow zone shown in the figures as being knurled. The roll has a vertical face 109 (Fig. 2) which is located as close as pos sible to a vertical face 111 of the presser foot which servesas an edge guide for the work.
Inasmuch as the presser foot 11 is supported from below in the manner shown, so
that there is above and around it a free and unobstructed space, a piece of work 100 having in it an opening may be placed, as shown in Fig. 2, with the 'presser foot extending throughthe opening and a portion of the work along the edge of the opening resting upon the feed roll. The work may now be guided and swung as may be necessary to maintain an edge of the opening in contact with the vertical face 111 while it is fed to the knife until the entire edge of the opening has been skived.
The presser foot may be adjusted vertically by turning the screw 29 and angularly by turning the screw 37. It may-be adjusted transversely to the direction of feed movement of the work whenever the screw 51 is loosened; and it maybe adjusted in the direction of feed movement of the work by loosening the screw 23 and adjusting the plate or table 21. If it is desired at any time to inspect the mounting of the presser foot. the crank 59 is manipulated, as in the use of the machine disclosed in the Letters Patent to which reference has been made, to unlock the auxiliary frame 15 so that the auxiliary frame may be swung out to expose to view the mounting of the presser foot.
Although the invention has been illustrated as embodied in a particular type of skiving machine and has been described in connection with the skiving of a particular kind of work, it should be understood that the invention is' not limited in the scope of its application to any particular type of machine nor to any particular kind of work.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desireto secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A machine of the class described having,

in combination, a cylindrical knife, a feed roll, a table over which the work is fed, a presser foot, and means for supporting the presser foot from below to leave a free and unobstructed space above and around all sides of the presser foot, said supporting means comprising a block mounted for vertical adjustment in the table and a pivot for the presser foot carried by the block.
2. A machine of the class described having, in combination, a cylindrical knife, a feed roll, a table over which the work is fed, a presser foot, means for supporting the presser foot from below to leave a free and unobstructed space above and around all sides of the presser foot, said supporting means comprising a block mounted for vertical adjustment in the table, a carrier pivoted to the block, and means for adjusting the presser foot with respect to the block in a direction transverse to the direction of feed movement of the work.
3. A machine of the class described having, in combination, a skiving knife, a feed roll, a table over which the work is fed to the knife, and a presser foot carried by the table, the table being mounted upon the frame of the machine for adjustment toward and from the feed roll.

a block mounted for vertical adjustment in the table, a carrier for a presser foot pivoted to the block, a presser foot mounted upon the carrier, and an adjusting member threaded into the block and engaglng the carrier.

A machine of the class described having, in combination, a knife, a feed roll, a, work table over which the work is fed by the roll, a block mounted for vertical adjustment in the table, a carrier for a presser foot pivoted to the block, a presser foot mounted upon the carrier, an adjusting member threaded into the block and engaging the carrier, and a spring to take up backlash between the carrier and the adjusting member.
6. A machine of the class described having,
drical knife mounted in said frame for rotation about a substantially horizontal axis, the upper portion of the knife projecting above the top of said frame, an auxiliary frame pivoted to the main frame about a substantially vertical axis, the top of the auxiliary frame being at substantially the same level as the top of the main frame, and a feed roll and a presser foot carried by the auxiliary frame.
