as viewed on the drawing, will. axially move the disk 26 into engagement with the wheel 21, and the disk 25 out of engagement with the Wheel 21, and vice versa.
Preferably upon the upper bearing 23 for the shaft 19, brake levers 50 and 51 are pivotally mounted as at 52 and 53, respectively, on opposite sides of the bearing, and a brake shoe 54 is pivotally mounted, as at upon one end 56 of the lever 50, whereby the brake shoe 54 may be lowered and raised by the lever 50 into and out of braking engagement with the top of the wheel 21.
Upon an end 57 of the lever 51, opposite to the end 56 of the lever 50, a brake shoe 58 is pivotally mounted as at 59, tor lowering and raising into and out of braking on, igeincnt with the top of the wheel 21.
The other end ($0 of the brake lever 50 c:-; tends beyond the perii ihery of the whee and similarly, opposite the end GO of the levr r 50, the other end 61 of the lever 51 extends beyond the periphery of the wheel 21, and the ends 60 and 61 are pivotally co erected, respectively, as at 62 and G3, with the upper ends of downwardly extending brake rods 6 1- and 65, the lower ends of which are connected, respectively, with opposite ends of transversely extending brake operating bar (56, which is preferably located above the coupling 18. The shaft 19 preferably extends through a central aperture 67 in the brake operating bar 66, whereby the lower face 68 of the bar 66 may be impinged by the upwardly moving coupling 18, elevating the bar 66 and thus lowering the brake shoes and 58 into braking engagement with the wheel 21, for stopping the rotation of the same.
As illustrated, the disks 25 and 26 are in neutral position, and the belts and are being driven in the same direction indicated by the arrows thereon.
If the disk 25 is brought into frictional driving engagement with the wheel 21 by a movement to the left of the operating lever 45, the screw 15 will be rotated to lower the reciprocating head 11 for carrying out a pressing operation.
After the pressing operation has been completed, the operating lever 4.15 is moved to the right, and the disk 25 is disenge and the disk 26 is engaged with the wheel rev: sing the rotation of the wheel 21, and causing the screw 15 to reversel rotate to elevate the reciprocating head 1 1 until the c niling 18 strikes, as aforesaid, the brake operating bar 66, and causes the brake shoes 5% and 58 to engage with. the wheel 21. and stop the rotition thereof.
For simultaneously disengaging the disk 26 from the wheel 21, (hiring the braking of the wheel 21. a. bell crank 69 is pivotaliy mounted as at 70 upon a suitable bracket Tl depending below the bearing frame 2 1:, and one arm 7 2 of the bell crank laterally extends above the brake operating bar 60, for being impinged by the upper face 73 thereof, and the other arm T-l of the bell crank extends downwardly across the bar l2 for impinging a collar 7 5 secured in a suitable position thereon.
Accordingly, when the brake operatin bar 66 is raised, its upper face 73 will strike against the bell crank arm 72, swinging the same about its pivotal mounting, so that the other arm 74 of the bell crank will strike against the collar 75 and move th ar 12 to the left, thereby disengang the disk 26 from the wheel 21.
I claim:
1. In a press and the like including a reciprocating head, means for operating the head including a rotatable wheel and a shaft keyed to the wheel and slidable axially of the wheel, the shaft being connected with the head for r ising and lowering the head, means for driving the operating means, and means actuated by the shaft for disengaging the driving means when the head has reached a predetermined position.
2. In a press and the like including a reciprocating head, means for operating the head including a rotatable wheel an d a shaft keyed to the wheel and slid able axially of the wheel, the shaft being connected with the head for raising and lowering the head, reversible means for driving the operating means, and means actuated by the shaft for disengagin the driving means when the head has reached a predetermined position.
3. In a press and the like including a reeiprocating head, means for operating the head including a rotatable wheel and a shaft keyed to the wheel and slidable axially of the wheel. the shaft being connected with the head for raising and lowering the head, means for driving the operating means. a brake for the wheel, and means actuated by the shaft for moving the brake into braking engaga ment with the wheel when the head has reached a predetermined position.
1. In a press and the like including a re ciprocating head, means for operating; the head including a. rotatable wheel and a shaft keyed to the wheel and slidable axially of the wheel, the shaft being connected with the head for raising and lowering the head, means for driving the operating means, a brake for the wheel. means actuated by the shaft for movthe brake into braking engagement with the wheel when the head has reached a predetermined position, and means actuated by the brake actuating means for disengaging the driving means from the head operating means simultaneously with the braking thereof.
In testimony that I claim the above, I have hereunto subscribed my name.
