My invention relates to the art of cutting slots in metal plates, and is particularly ap-' plicable to the cutting'of slots in oil well casing. 1
In the production of oil, it is generally necessary to provide a steel. casing or pipe which extends from the surface of the earth down into the oil sands, and which is perforated where it extends into the oil sands with slots suiiiciently'narrow to hold back the coarse sand and gravel surroundnig the pipe, while at thesame time permitting toe oil toflow say, it is desirable to produce a slot having a uniform width at the outer surface; of the pipe, which slot is wider at the inner surface tom of the counterbore portion 18.

The method of cutting a slot having inwardly'and downwardly divergent sidewalls which comprises: heating the metal to be out, directing two relatively diverging cutting jets to attack the metal at pointsxrelatively spaced transversely of the desired slot, directmg an auxiliary cutting jet to attack the metal between said points, and moving all of said ets relative to said metal.

A. method of cutting a slot in a metal member, the walls of which slot have a given angular relation, which consists in heating a given area of said metal member, directing a pair of jets through said metal in said heated area, the axes of'said jets belng substantially parallel with the planes of the desired walls of said slot, moving said ets in said heated area to form said Walls and produce a tongue of metal projecting from said metal member between said walls, directing a third jet against said tongue in said heated area and moving said third et in c0njunction with said pair of jets so as to consume said tongue as it is formed.
4. A method of burning a slot in a metal member which consists in heating a given area of said member, burning individual slots in said heated area to form the walls of the aforesaid slot and produce a tongue of metal projecting from said metal member between said walls, and consuming said tongue by burning, as said individual slots are being formed.
5. A method as set forth in claim 4 in which said tongue is consumed in said heated area.
6. The method of cutting a slot having in- Wardly and downwardly divergent side walls which comprises: heating the metal to be cut, directing against said metal two cutting jets which impinge on a line perpendicular to the axis of the desired slot to produce the angled side Walls of said slot, directing a third cutting et between said two cutting jets to attack the intermediate metal between said side walls, and. moving all of said jets relative to said metal.
7. The method of cutting a slot having inwardly and downwardly divergent side walls which comprises: heating the metal to be cut, directing two relatively diverging cutting jets which impinge on a line perpendicular to the axis of the desired slot, directing an auxiliary cutting jet to attack the metal between said side walls, and moving all of said jetsrelative to said metal.
8. The method of cutting a slot having inwardly and downwardly divergent side walls which comprises: heating the metal to be cut, directing two diverging jets with their axes lying in a plane transversely disposed relative to the axis of the slot to form the side walls of said slot and a core of metal in the interior of said slot, directing a jet against said core and moving said last mentioned jet so as to closely follow said diverging jets at a fixed distance therefrom.
