HOSE PRESS Filed July 19, 1926 3 Sheets-Sheet 5 a 12 121 If), 10
I n u p a o I r Patented F ch. 3, 1931 PATENT RICHARD W. DINZL, BYWOOI), PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO SOIJ'THWARK FOUNDRY & MACHINE COMPANY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, A CGRPORA- rrron or "PENNS LVANIA 'HOSE PRESS Application filed July 19,
One object of my invention is to provide a hose press of extreme length, which :structure includes a horizontal base or bed, with matching die members or elements, pref-en ably in the form of steam platens, each die element having a plurality of semi-circular recesses forming mold cavities in which lengths of hose may be cured; the lower d-ie element or platen being-fixed to the base while the upper die element or platen is vertically movable with respect to the same. By preference, these die elements or platens are of such dimensions as to :provide a series of recesses in parallel arrangement widthwise of the same, so thata plurality oflengths or" hose can be molded and cured at a .single'operation.
A further objectoi my invention is to provide upper and lower die members or elements of extreme length in the form of steam platens, which may be solid metal plates of the type set forth in my Patent No. 1,549,464, dated August 11-, 1925, heated by the circulation of steam through continuous passages formed in said platens by drilling .in the manner set forth in said patent.
A further object of my invention is to provide longitudinal stiffening members for the upper die element or platen in order that it may be maintained in a truly horizontal condition for proper engagement and perfect registry with the lower die element or .platen.
A further object of my invention is to provide lifting means for the upper die element or platen, and to associate such lifting means with clamping means carried by said upper die element or platen'for engagement with the lower die element or platen; such clamping means being thrown into and out of clamping position automatically, simultaneously with the operation of lowering and raising the upper die element or platen.
And a still further object of my invention is to provide means whereby the upper. die element or platen maybe lifted from :a plurality of points simultaneously bythe opera tion of .a single fluid-operated piston contained within a cylinder mounted above the press. I
These and other features "of my invention 1926. Serial no. 123,520.
tion of the structure shown in 1 Fig. 2, being partly in section and Fig. 3, being in greater detail. I
Figs. 4 and '5, are cross sectional views on the line III-III, Fig.2; showing the upper platen or die-member in the closed and open positions, respectively.
6, is a diagrammatic plan view, showing the respective die members or platens partly in top view and partly in section, and
Fig. 7, is an enlarged sectional view illustrating a detail of my invention.
. My improved hose press comprises upper and lower matching the members which, in the present instance, are in the form of steam platens, longitudinally grooved to provide mold cavities for the hose lengths when said die members are'in closed and registering position; such platens being provided with continuous internal passages, preferably arranged'in sectionsior the-circulation of a temperature controlling medium, usually steam, as set forth in my patent above referred to, and theselpassages may be arranged in groups or sections. v
The lower die element, indicated at 1, may be supported by I-beams 2, embedded in a concrete base such I-beams being spaced apart and positioned by means of bolts 4. The lower dieelement or platen is longitudinally grooved in parallel relation, as indicated at 5,to form the lower halves of a series of mold cavities for hose lengths, or articles of similar nature. The upper die element or platen, indicated at 10, is provided with similar recesses 5a, registering with those'of the lower die element or platen, and such upper die element or platen is stiti'ened longitudinally by means of I-b'eains 11, which may be secured thereto by suitab'le'bolts' 12.
Pivotally connected at each side of the upper die element or platen, throughout the length of the same are clamping levers 15; the edges of such upper die member or platen being provided with brackets 16, secured thereto by bolts 17,1n which pivot pins 18,1tor said clamping levers are mounted. The lower ends of these lovers are provided with inwardly pro ectin por 10118 19, which underlie the edges of the lowerdie element or platen when in the clamping position, and these projecting portions carry adjustable clamping blocks 20, secured thereto by bolts said blocks being interposed between the projecting portions and the edges of the lower die element or platen, when the press is in the closed position, as indicated in Fig.4. Between these projecting portions 19, and the blocks 20, removable. liners or shims 22, are placed, for a purpose hereinafter described.
The upper ends of these levers 15, are connected with brackets 25, carried by an E-beam 26, extending longitudinally of the press, by means of links 27, and such I-beam in turn is supported by cables 28, passing over sheaves 29, carried by a supporting frame 30; the opposite ends of said cables being connected to the end of a piston rod 31, whose piston 32, lies within a cylinder 33, also mounted on said supporting structure 30. This supporting structure may consist of a pair of I- beams 35, secured together in the form of a truss and suitably supported above the press, longitudinally of the same.
The several cables 28, are connected to the Lbeam 26, by adjustable shackles 34, so that the respective cables can be properly adjusted to insure that any motion of the piston to elevate the I-beam 26, carryin the upper die element or platen will be synchronous; and in like manner, when it is desired to lower the upper die element or platen, a gradual e.\'- haust of fluid-pressure from the cylinder 33, will permit the upper die element or platen to maintain its horizontal position while being lowered upon the lower die element or )iston. When the parts of the lifting mechanism are in the lowered position, indicated in Figs. 2, 3, and st, she links 27 are spread apart by their bracket connections with the I-beam'26, so as to push the upper ends otthe levers l5 outwardly, and bring the inwardly projecting portions with the clamping blocks 20, under the edges of the lower die element or platen I. The platens or die elements of the pressare maintained in the closed position by the clamping levers 15; the spreading of the links 27 causin the lower ends to grip the same between the points of contact and thev pivot pins 18.
As the upper die element or platen is lowcred into place, the projecting portions of the levers 15 pass under the lower platen; further downward movement spreading the upper ends of the levers 15, and crowding the projecting portions 19, with the blocks 20, beneath the edges of the lower platen. To insure an even pressure upon the edges of the platens the blocks 20 may be adjusted to proper position by the insertion of liners or shims 22, between the same and the projecting portions 19. Upon imparting a lifting movement to the I-beam' 27, when it is desired to raise the upper die element or platen, these clamping blocks areautomatically released; the connection of said beam with the links causing the latter and the levers to assume the position shown-in Fig. 5, with the lower engaging portions of such levers displaced outwardly, as clearly indicated in said View.
In order that the I-beam 26, with the upper die element or platen 10, and the several bracket connections and levers may be supported temporarily, while filling the mold cavities in the lower die element or platen.
or for other purposes, and to avoid an undue strain upon the lifting cylinder, the supporting frame 30 for the latter is provided with a series of depending hooks '38, and the I-beam 26 carries eye members 39, to be engaged by these hooks.
The continuous passages within the respective. die elements or platens for the circulation of the temperature-controlling medium (usually steam), are provided with inlet and discharge openings, indicated at a, and 6, respectively. By preference these passages are arranged or disposed as independent, sections; the respective platens shown in the drawings having four such sections, indicated at A, A, A and A 7 In'order that the platens may be positioned laterally to insure registry of the respective mold cavities, one platen, the upper one for instance, may have the edges of its meeting face recessed, as indicated at 0, while the other platen will be provided with edge flanges (Z, fitting these recesses, as clearly shown in Fig. 4.
