Description

W. H. REIFF.
BURGLAR-ALARM.
No. 179,060., Patented June 20,1876.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. REIFF, 0F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BURGLAR -ALARMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 179,060, dated J nne 20, 1876; application filed May 25, I876.
To a ll whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. REIFF, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented an ]inproved Burglar-Alarm, of which the follow-' ing is a specification:
The object of my invention is to construct a cheap and simple device for exploding blank cartridges, said device being especially useful as a burglar alarm, but being also applicable A is a block of metal, which .is provided at one end with a screw-stem, a, and: has, near the opposite end, an opening, b, for receiving the cartridge to be exploded. B-is a springplate, having two arms, cand c, the former of which is hinged at the end to the block A, the arm 0 being connected ,to one end of a link, d, which is adapted to a slot in the block A, and is pivoted to the same. The pivot of the link is so arranged, in respect to the point where the arm 0 is hinged, that when the latter arm is turned to a position at right angles to the plate A the spring-arms will be compressed, ainl their tendency to recoil will be resisted by the link d. Whenthe plate B,
therefore, is turned sothat the pin which secures the end of its arm 0 tothe end of the link is out of a line drawn through the pivot of the link and hinge of the arm 0, the compressed springs will be at liberty, and a'pin, e,
on the plateB will, by the recoil of the springs,
be brought into violent contact with the flange of the cartridge in the opening I).
Simplicity and economy of construction are attained by thus combining both spring and hammer in the plate 13-.
' When the above device has to be used as a burglar-alarm the screw a is inserted into the jamb of a door'or frame of a window, close to the edge of the door or sash, and the springplate is then turned to the position shown in Fig. 2. Any attempt to open the door or sash will release the plate and cause the explosion of-the cartridge. a
By adapting a handle to the screw a, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 3, the device forms a toy pistol, the spring-plate being in the vproper position to beoperated by the pressure of the thumb of the hand which grasps the handle.
v I claim as my invention- The combination of the pivoted link (I, the
block A, recessed forthe reception of a ca'r-' tridge, and slotted for the reception ofthe link, and the plate B, also slotted for the reception of the link, and forming both a spring and a hammer for strikingthe cartridge, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I h ave signed in y nameto this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM H. REIFF. Witnesses:

HARRY SMITH.
