Our invention refers to an improvement in hammer stamps for the purpose of stamping sheet metal'or any other similar commodity having a substantially flat-surface,
against which a stamp may be thrust for imparting thereon, in the manner of a hammer, having an operating handle. In such stamps, it is desirable that there be interposed between the handle and the stamping face a suflicient degreevof resiliency adapting the face of the stamp to effect good contact, independent of variations in exact parallelism between the surface to be stamped and the stamping surface, when used.
The device consists generally of a stamp, in either single or double form, having an operating handle so connected as to permit of a limited degree of flexibility whereby to compensate for anylack of accuracy in delivering the blow so as to allow the stamp ing face to automaticallyadjust itself, under the impulse of the blow.
In its construction, our stamp is composed of a single or double head portion composed of rubber or other suitable resilient or flexible material, a handle and means connecting it with the stamping member or members, together with detachable stamp ing heads secured thereto. Such heads are also of rubber having on their faces any desired imprinting characters and are pro vided with an inner reinforcing plate and securing studs.
' A feature of special importance and value in the present invention is in-the combination with the main stamp of an additional laterally arranged stamp or stamps capable of being secured between the main head and the stamping head, for additional or separate stamping operations, with certain other features of construction and advantage, as shall be more fully hereinafter described.
The device is in its principal elements similar to that shown in a comp-anion application filed herewith Ser. No. 355,124.
Referring to the drawings showing one preferred construction:

In the drawings, the main inner portion of the stamp is in the form, ofa main hammer head 2 of rubber or the like having. an enlarged outer body of circular or other formfadapting it to receive and be secured to the detachable stampinghead 2b.
The body portion of the head 2 may be of any suitable form, and is provided with an inner diminishing or narrowed neck 6 having a flat opposing face for attachment to and connection with, the end v7 of an op erating handle 8. A'central connecting :bolt
9 is imbedded and vulcanized by its head and shank portion within the middle of one of the heads 2 and projects sufficiently far beyond its'smaller attaching face to extend through a registering hole in the end of the handle and 'therebeyond, for attachment to the companion head 2a. at the opposite side, as in Fig. 4:. y
In such construction the opposite head 2a is generally similar to head 2 above described, but is provided with a centrally imbedded'andvulcanized sleeve nut 11 of any suitable form.
The nut 11 makes screw engagement with the threaded outer end of bolt 9' by turning and tightening'thereon, by which the two heads are tightly clamped together and against the opposite side faces of the handle terminal 7. By such construction head 2a may be readily connected to or disconnected from the other head 2, for substitution as to one or both, of other similar heads of different size or-for any other purpose.
By such construction the comparatively soft rubber body ofthe heads'surrounding the bolt and nut respectively provides ample flexibility to adapt the face of either supplemental stamping head 2?) to make a good stamping impression, whether brought fairly and evenly ag inst-thwartin bab -s mped;

VJ hen there is any such variation and the face of either head is brought against a surface with which it would not ordinarily register, due to any angular relation, the flexibility of the head connection with the handle permits of automatic adjustment and good stamping results, under impact of the blow.
The supplemental stamping head 26 at either side is provided with any suitable printing letters, figures or characters, as indicated on the face views, Figs. 2 and 8. Such characters are ordinarily molded in the rubber, as at 3, or may be in the form of detachable inserted type 4:, all inounted' on a common plane. a
For the purpose of reinforcing the head 26 closely adjacent to the area embodying such characters, and for providing a substantial attaching base, the-head 2b is provided with a thin reinforcing disk or plate 5. Such plate is tightlysecured to the inner face of head 2?) by any suitable means as cementing, vulcanizing, etcl, and may be of copper, brass, or other suitable material.
Heads 2 and 2a are each'provided with transversereinforce'd bolt holes having inserted tubular lining sleeves 13 extending through from one side to the other, as in Fig. 4. Head 2?) is provided with a corresponding series of similarly located and spaced connecting bolts 14: having enlarged reinforcing beveled heads 15, the hat inner ends of which are soldered or welded to the face of plate 5. The outer ends of sleeves 13 are inwardly beveled to receive heads 15, so that when the stamping head 26 is in position, the parts fit snugly and tightly together, and are held by the securing nuts 16.
One advantage of the comparatively thin plate 5 when tightly secured to the stamping head 2?) is that it may be readily bent to a concave form for attachment to the convex face of the main head or base, as in making a rocker stamp, capable of rolling motion over the surface being stamped.
By such construction it will be seen that a supplemental head maybe substitu ed for another at either side, having any suitable or different form, kind, or arrangement of stamping characters, either molded in the rubber face of the head itself, or separately attached as bythe stamping characters 42a.
The latter may be of the split wedge type like that shown in prior patent of W. Pannier,'Jr., No. 1,191,820. In such case their'divided bases bear against the inner socketed surface of the head, closely adjacent to plate 5," providing 'a sufficiently firm and'comparatively rigid opposing bear- H10.
For the purpose of providing a lateral stamp or" stamps, arranged atri-g'htangles to the main stamping face, we provide the projecting stamping member or element 17 of any suitable kind, as rubber or metal, having an attaching plate 18 secured to flange terminal 19 of bar 20, as by bolts 21. Bar 20 is imbedded across the face of head 2, flush with its attaching surface, and snugly mounted within a receiving channel or groove 22 extending across the face, preferably in line with one pair of bolts.
At the locations of the bolts the bar 20 is cut out in circular or other form and surrounds a boss or extending portion 23 of the main base, which projects through an opening 24 of the bar, as shown. 7 I
By such construction the bar 20 is maintained fixedly in position against either lateral or longitudinal shifting, and when the stamping head 26 is in position, also against outward movement.
As thus constructed either of the stamping surfaces may be applied by merely adjusting the grasping hold on the handle.
. Either of the stamping heads 2?) or 17 may be removed and substituted by others quickly and easily,or the main stamping heads 2 or 2a may be used with the handle, either singly or double, and the device provides for quick and complete application of a great variety of marking.
g The construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood and ap- 'preciated' by all those familiar with hand operated stamping devices. It is comparatively simple in construction, capable of easy and rapid change or substitution, and may be used at considerable speed by alternately striking upon an inking pad and then upon a surface to be marked, without the necessity for any special'skill.
The device is extremelf useful, very durable, and may be made in different shapes. designs, sizes, weights, or otherwise changed or varied by the skilled mechanic, but all such changes are to be understood as within the scope of the following claims.
hat we claim is:
1. A hammer stamp consisting of a'main head provided with a separable stamping head secured to its face and a laterally extending stamping head held between said heads.
2. A hammer stamp consisting of a main head'provided with a separable stamping head secured to its face and a laterally eX- tending stampingliead held between said heads, and a handlesecured to the main head.
3. A hammer stamp consisting of a main head provided with a separable stamping head secured to its face and a laterally extending stamping head held between said heads and provided with a separable stamping unit.
4. The combination with a main stamping head and a separable stamping head secured thereto, of an intervening bar having a laterally extending stamping unit.
5. The combination with a main stamping head and a separable stamping head secured thereto, of an intervening bar having an attaching face thereon and a stamping unit separably attached thereto. 1
6. In combination, a main head having a handle and a flat face, a stamping head secured thereon, a transverse bar extending across between the main head and the stamping head having a projecting base, and a stamping unit on said base.
7. In combination, a main head having-a fiat face and a recess therein, a bolt socket extending through the head having a surrounding abutment flush with the flat face, a stamping bar mounted in the recess having an opening engaging said abutment, and means for holding the stamping bar having a bolt engaging the socket.
8. In combination, a main head having a flat face and a recess therein, a bolt socket extending through the head having a surrounding abutment fiush with the flat face, a stamping bar mounted in the recess having an opening engaging said abutment, and a stamping head fitting against the face of the main head and the stamping bar having a holding bolt extending through the bolt socket and clamping it directly against the main head and the stamping bar.
9. In combination, a main flexible stamping head provided with a flat attaching face having a plurality of transverse bolt openings, a transverse slot across the face of the head, a bar therein having a terminal flange, a stamping unit secured thereon, and a stamping head having a series of holding bolts extending through the bolt openings and confining the bar in its slot.
10. In combination, a main flexible stamping head provided with a. flat attaching face having a plurality of transverse bolt opening-s, a transverse slot across the face of the head, a bar therein having a terminal flange, a stamping unit secured thereon, and a stamping head having a holding bolt extending through the bar and one of said bolt openings and confining the bar in its slot. 11. In combination with a main head having a flat attaching face and a transverse slot therein, integral abutments of the head extending through the slot to the plane of the attaching face, abar laid in the slot having laterally extending stamping heads, and a stamping head having holding bolts extende ing through the main head and said abutments.
