Description

Jan. 20, 1931 v H. R. DIURINICK LAMP SHADE Filed Sept. 18, 1929 2 Sheets-Sheet 1 I b & Inventor v izz mw- /r Attorney 7 Jan. 20, 1931. H. R. DURINICK 8 5 LAMP SHAD Filed Sept. 18, 1929 2 sheets-sheet 2 I Atomey 8, and said frame member 7 at the lowerend thereof extends beyond thelower horizontal frame member to provide a finger engaging handle designated as at 11.
Similarly, the upper frame member 9 is of a length less than the length of the lower "frame member 10, and the frame members I "9 and 10 have their ends welded to the adjacent end portions of the framemembers 7 and 8. Thus it will be appreciated that the vertical frame members 7 and 8 incline gradually upwardly so that obviously the frame sections 5 and 6 taper toward-the1rupper ends.
Wire frame members 12-12 are welded at their upper ends to the L-shaped-frame members ad acent the upper horizontal frame bar 9 while at their lower ends said frame members 12 arewelde d to saidL-shaped members adjacent the lower horizontal frame member 10. Y
The frame members 12 are bowed asat 13-1-13, the distance between the vertical frame sections 7 and 8 and'the corresponding frame members 12-12 being greater adjacent the bottom of the frame sections 5 i and 6 than at the'top thereof.
At'their bowed portions, the framemem- 3-6 bers1212 are connected through the medium of a cross frame member 14, the ends of which cross member 14 are welded to the adjacent frame members 12-42; At their upper ends, the frame sections 5 and 6 are hingedly connected together as designated generally at 15. a
In forming this'hinge connection 15.1 pro- .vide an elongated sleeve or ferrule- 16 loosely mounted on the top frame member 9 of the framelsection 5. N BXtiI provideva pair of spaced parallel rods orwires 17 ada ted for disposition between the sleeve 16 an r the top frame member 9 of the frame section 6, the sleeve 16, wires 17 and the upper frame member 9 of theframe section 6 allwelded together to provide asingle mass designated generally by the reference character 18 thus forming a strong and durable hinge oint between the frame sections ,5 and 6.
It is to be understood of course that the sleeve 16 shifts about the horizontal frame member 9 of the frame section 5, rather tightly so as to set up a binding actionbetween the sleeve 16 and member 9, so that 1 when-the frame sections 5 and 6 are swung outwardly away from one another or ins wardly toward one another, said frame sections will be maintained any predetermined distance apart, thus enabling the lamp, shade to be adjusted for assuming any desired size.
WVelded to the inner bowed frame members 12 of the respective frame sections, adjacent the upper and lower ends thereof are the elongated shanks 19of support engaging hooks 20, the :hooked end portions'of which extend upwardly beyond the} upper hinged portionsof the frame sections 5 and 6.
The hooks 20 are adapted to engage any suitable support such as the upper edge of shade thereon, I
One of the frame sections, as herein shown,
theback of a'bed, for supporting the lamp the frame section 6, adjacent its upper hinged end is provided with a lamp supporting 1nember 20, which fla mp supporting member 20 preferably formed of wire andhas its terniik nals welded to the upper end'portion of the frame members 12 adjacent the upper frame member 9 ofthe-said frame section.
,The member 20 intermed ate its ends bent to provide a loop 21'for the reception: of'a conventional lamp socket, vwhereby an electric lamp as, shown may besupported in a depending position within the frame section 6 and in close proximity to thehinged connec' tion,so that the lamp will be disposed at approximately the apex of the completed substantially heart shaped lampshade.
In completing the shade, each of the frame sections 5 and'6 has a suitable fabric covering 22, which coverin '22 has its longitudinal Hedges covering the rame members 12 -12,
and said covering22-extends from the upper frame member 9 to the flower frame member Likewise the front and rear of the frame sections are provided with'a suitable fabric covering 23 which completely conceals. and;
extends between the adjacent frame members 7 and 12 and 8 and 12 respectively.
, At the front of the shade, and extending; 1
bet-Ween the frame members 7 of the frame sections 5 and 6 is a substantially V-shape'd LAM-9 fabric 24 which is secured" atvits opposite edges to the frame members of the respective frame sections.v The usual pullchain25 of the electric lamp socket extends downwardly from the shade and at its lower end may be providedwith an ornamentalfinger grip 26. *Likewise, the connecting weblor'fabricfi i between the frame sections onthe outer face thereof may have somesmtable decoration or ornament 27 arranged thereont 1n actual practice, the lampshade having the electric lamp mounted therein as before described,1may bejsuspended'from the top of the back of a bed, the hook 2O engaging the upper edgeiof the bed so that the lamp shade extends parallel to the back of'the bed. Ob-
viously, one by placing his fingers on the ex tension or hand grip 11-11may move the frame sections 5 and 6 upon their hinge connection toward'or away'from one another for. u increasing or decreasing the size of the lamp.
sections are swung upon their hinged joints,
spective sections,
any predetermined distance,- the sectionsiof the shade 'vvill remainfixed in-"that position. thus enabling one to regulatethe size 'of the shade. n v
It is yet tobe mentioned,'that thefabrio coverings 22 and 23 maybe soarranged on the respective frame "5861310118," in any 811111 1 manner, to produce an artisable and desired tic and attractive lamp shade as illustrated in Figures 1 and 2,'that is, theffabric may be V bers 9 and 10, and 'the'bovved framemembers V a):
12, thus adding a moretfinished 'appear t0 the shade. Y I
4 However the, arrangement ofth'e" fabricis I not limited to thisspecificarrangement as I port, said shade comprising apair of hing- V edly connected skeleton frame sections, a coy-" ering for each ofi'said sections-means for r'etaining the frame sections in a predetermined of the individual. Likewise,
set forth, but that-it is to herein set forth but obviously maybe arranged in any manner as may suit thetaste the hooks 20 are arranged Within a covering or sheathing 29 of suitable material, so that When'the hooks are engaged over the upper edge of the bed danger of scratching, marrmg or other- Wise disfiguring the bedorfurnitureto which the shade may-be suspended will be elimi natedn f 1 r Itis believed that from the foregoing de-, f
taken in connection with the ac-' vcompanying drawings, a clear understanding of the construction, utility and advantages of a lamp shade of this character willbe had qf erg grslti scri tion by those skilled in this art.
