Description

Jan. 20, 1931. A. H. FILANDER ETAL CAR TRUCK Filed Feb. 3, 1928 Will/ll i Patented Jan. 20, 193! UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE] ARTHUB H. FILANDER AND GEORGE T. JOHNSON, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO, ASSIGNOBS TO THE BUCKEYE STEEL CASTINGS COMPANY, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO CAR TRUCK Application filed February 3, 1928. Serial No. 251,630.
This invention relates to improvements in car trucks, one object of the invention being to provide simple and efiicient means whereby both inside and outside stops for the side frame shall be carried by the bolster, but to so apply the outside stops to the bolster that they may be removed and at the same time be normally held in interlocked relation to the bolster by pressure of the springs, and be removable when such pressure is relieved by raising of the bolster, to permit assembling or removal of the side frame.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a view partly in elevation and partly in section showing an embodiment of our invention;
Figure 2 is a view partly in plan and partly in transverse section;
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view, artly in elevation, and
Figure 4 is a plan view showing a portion of the bolster.
The side frame comprises an upper or compression member land a lower or tension member 2, the central portion of the latter. being provided with lateral extensions 3, 4, to extend the spring seating capacity of the structure. The side frame also comprises columns 5, 5 suitably spaced to define a central opening for the accommodation of the bolster 6, the spring plank 7 and springs 8, 9, the bolster being provided at each end with an extension 6 to enlarge the spring seating capacity of said bolster. The springs 8 are seated at their upper ends against the bolster and at their lower ends against the spring plank 7, while the springs 9 are seated at their upper ends against the bolster and rest at their lower ends on shelves 10 integral with the side frame and partially upon-raised seats 11 on the spring plank 7.
The outer webs 12 at the upper portions of the side frame columns are offset relatively to the inner webs 13 and relatively to the in-. 50 termediate webs 14 so as to present an apends and at respective sides with laterally .lation is maintained by pressure exerte beproximate Z-shape in cross section and said webs 12 and 13 may be provided at their free edges with ribs 15, 16.
The bolster 6 is provided near each of its projecting enlargements 17 forming shoulders 18 to cooperate with the offset webs 12 of the side frame columns and thus form inside stops for the side frame.
The bolster 6 is provided in its under face in the lateral portions 17 thereof, with recesses 19 in which the body portions of keys or outside stop members 20 are seated, narrower recesses 21 being also provided for the shanks 22 of said members 20. At the outer ends of said shanks'laterally project- 111 lugs 23 are provided and form the outsi e stops per se for cooperation with the flanged ofi'set column webs 12. Thus it will be seen that the side frame column webs 12 will be disposed normally between the inside stop shoulders 18 on the bolster and the outside stops 23 carried by the bolster.
It will be observed that outside key or stop members 20-23 have interlocking relation to the bolster and that such interlockin retween the cooperative relation of the bolster and the springs 9, the upper ends of which latter overlie said key or stop members and the latter may be provided with depending projections 24 to enter the upper ends of said springs.
When it is desired to assemble the side frame onto the truck or remove it therefrom, the bolster will be first raised sufliciently to permit removal of the outside stop or key members. The spring plank, springs and bolster may then be raised and the spring plank freed from the side frame, permltting ready lateral movement of the side frame to assemble the same in the truck or remove it therefrom.
Having'fully described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
Bil
edge, a bolster having shoulders forming fixed inside stops, and removable outside stop having interlocking relation to the bolster, the inwardly projecting column webs bein disposed between the inside fixed sto s an the outside removable stops carried y the bolster.
2. Ina car truck, the combination of a side frame having columns spaced apart to provide a bolster opening, each column having an inwardly rojectin web at its outer edge, a bolster liaving shoulders forming fixed inside stops, removable outside stop having interlocking relation to the bolster, the inwardly projecting column webs being disposed between the inside fixed stops and the outside removable stops carried by the bolster, and springs operable to maintain interlocking relation between said removable outside stop and the bolster.
3. In a car truck, the combination of a side frame having columns spaced apart, a bolster entering the side frame and having fixed inside stops cooperable with said columns, said bolster having recesses in its under face, outside stop members removably seated in said recesses and having laterally projecting portions at their forward ends cooperable with said columns, and springs under the bolster and engaging said outside removable stops retaining them seated in the recesses in the bolster.
4. In a car truck, the combination of a side frame having columns, a bolster entering the side frame and having laterally projecting portions forming inside stops cooperable with the bolster columns, said bolster having recesses in the under face of the lateral portions thereof, outside stops removably seated in said recesses and cooperable with said columns, and bolster springs under the lateral portions of the bolster and bearing upwardly against'said outside stops.
In testimony whereof, we have signed this specification.
ARTHUR H. FILANDER. GEORGE T. JOHNSON.
