This' invention relates to improvements yin pocket attachments for books with stiff covers to hold pencils, instrumentsyand the like. The object of the invention is the provision of asimple and inexpensive protective holder or pocket of simple construction, adapted to be detachably connected to a schoolbookor other book, and provided with expansible connections, whereby the holder may be adjusted as to length while yieldably and securely attached to the book-cover.

Students of classes requiring the use of drawinv instruments in connection with a textbook, such as in the study of geometry, usually carry such instruments in a sep-arate case.` Such instrument case is often mislaid or forgotten when the student enters his classroom, causing considerable annoyance and delay in the progress of the class. Students and readers generally often require pencils, notepaper, or other accessories while reading or studying.

It is the further object of this invention to provide a convenient protective holder for instruments that may be readily mounted on the textbook of the course requiring the use of the instruments contained therein, so that the pupil is fully equipped when entering the classroom for the prosecution of his studies, or to supply a pocket for retaining a readers conveniences in direct connection with the book with which they are used and which may be readily attached to any book as the need requires.

Other objects and advantages of my invention, and objects relating to details of construction and arrangement of parts, will be fully apparent in the course of the detailed description to follow.

` Referring to said views, the reference numeral 1 indicates a band of leather, leatherette, or other flexible and suitable material, of length adequate to extend about the front or rear coverQ of a book 3 of the usual size em- 60 ployed for textbooks, such as 12 mo. or 8 mo. size. Said band extends on its middle portion over the outside of the cover 2 and extends inwardly upon the inside of the cover in ends 5 and 5, which terminate to 'allow a space 6 65 therebetween.`lr A row ofeyelet holes 7 are formed along the'extremity of each of the band ends 5 and 5 through which an elastic cord' 8 is'laced across the space 6 to secure the band ends together in elastic condition so 70. that, when the `band is mounted upon the book-cover, by shoving the latter through the bandfrom'one edge, the lacings `8 will be stretched suiliciently to place a moderate degree of tension on the band thereby to provide a degree of adjustability for the band, without further adjustmentof the laces and furthermore to hold the pocket securely on the book-cover.

yOn the outer side of the band a rectangular piece 10, preferably ofleathe'r, is sewed along its bottom edge and side edges by a sewed seam 11, thus making a-pock'et 12 open at its upper end for the reception'of instruments, -such as the pencil compass 13, ruler '14, pencil 15, and eraser 16, and such other instruments as may be desired. Said pocket piece is positioned so that it will lie at the lower end of the' band ,y extending exteriorly of the book-cover at such position that its'bottom edge will be in substantial alignmentwith the larger size of books.

At 'theupper `edge of the band portion extending exteriorly of the book-cover a flap piece 17 is sewed along its upper edge, 95 as at 18, to the band and extends in lapped relationover the pocket piece 10. Complementary snap fasteners 20 and 2l are secured to the upper and lower edges of the pocket piece and flap, respectively, so that the flap may be secured over the opening of the pocket and the instruments therein held against loss or dislodgement. Upon the under side of the flap piece 17 a pocket strip 22 is sewed along its bottom and side edges in a seam 23 forming a relatively shallow pocket 25 which may be utilized to contain a protractor, as indicated at 26. When the flap piece is in secured position, the pocket 25 will be right side up to hold theY protractor against displacement. Y

It Will be seen that my improved pocket and holder is of extremely simple construction and particularly adapted for the Work intended. The sizes of books usually employed by the general reader and the grammar school and high school student are relatively constant as to size of cover, so that, when once the lacings 8 are secured in the manner described, the holder will fit upon almost any book the student may use. The holder may be taken off and put on bookcovers readilyA but cannot be accidentally displaced therefrom, due to the relatively extensive bearing that the band extends over the edges of the cover.

A pocket attachment for book covers, comprising a flexible band folded at its ends to form oppositely disposed flaps and open on both sides to slip over a book cover, flexible means connecting the flaps, a pocket fornied'on the lower outer 4:portion of the flexible band, a flexible flap at the upper outer portion of the flexible band, said flexible flap-:overlapping the upper end of the pocket, andmeans for fastening the flexible flap vto the pocket.

A pocket attachment for book covers, comprising a flexible band folded at its ends to form oppositelydisposed flaps and open on both sides to slip overa book cover, means connecting the free ends of the flaps, a pocket `on the lower outerportion of the flexible band, a flexible flap at the upper outer portion of the flexible band, a pocket on the inner side of the flexible flap, said flexible flap overlapping the upper end of the pocket on the lower outer portion of the band, and means for fastening the flexible flap to said pocket.
