Ml/z's Maa/fi'nleyBarton/ ATTORNEY WITNESS:
Patented Dec. 30, 1930 WILLIS MAGKINLEY BARTON, or FLORENCE, ALABAMA rnrson BAR Am) ALARM-SYSTEM cmcurr cLosEn Application filed February 13, 1928. 7 Serial No. 254,014.
The general object of this invention is to provide means for sounding an alarm when the bars of a prison or other building are out in an attempt to escape from the building or to enter the building This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out inthe appended claim.
V In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a View of a window of a prison, showing the invention applied thereto. 3
Figure 2 is a'section on line 2-2 of Fig- '20 ure 1. r p I Figure 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Fig ure 1.
Figure 4: is a view of one of the inner me1nbers of the bars.
Figure 5 is an enlarged sectional view showing how the inner member acts to close a switch when a bar is cut through.
Inthese drawings, 1 indicates a steel casing'which is placed in the window'or other opening to be barred and 2 indicates a plurality of tubes which form the bars and which have their ends passing through holes formed in the side walls of the casing, the ends of the bars being suitably fastened in the casing, such as by means of the washers 3 which may be drilled and tapped for receiving the ends of the bar and which may be provided with threaded holes to receive set screws for locking the bars to the washers. These washers may be brazed to the inner walls of the casing. The casing must be so formed that it will be impossible fora prisoner to remove parts thereof to gain access to the parts within the casing. A j
A pair of collars 4 is placed in each tube adjacent the ends thereof, these collars being fastened in place in any suitable manner, such as by means of the set screws 5'. A sectional rod 6'passes through each tube and is slidably supported-by the collars 4, the'two sections of the rod being connected together by thethreaded portions 7. The rod is provided with a flange 8 at eachend thereof, the flanged ends ofthe rod projecting well beyond the ends of the tube. A coil spring .1
9 is placed on each end of the rod and presses against the flange and the collar 4. A switch, a
10 is arranged in the casing, one opposite each flanged end of each rod, with the button 11 of the switch spaced a slight distance from i the end. The contacts 12 of each switch are connected by'the conductors 13 with a suitable'source of current and with an alarm so that when any one of the switches is closed, the alarmwill be sounded. j From the foregoing it will be'see'n that if a bar is cut through, the rod 6 must also be cut, and as soon as this rod is cut through, the springs 9, acting against theflanges 8, will push said flanges against the buttons 11 of the switches, thus closing the switches and thereby causing the alarm to sound so that the warden or jailor or other attendant will be notified that the bars are being cut.
It is thought from the foregoing descrip-i tion that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, providedthat such changes fall with-' inthe scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is The combination with a window, sash, of a metallic frame composed of angle iron members, the corresponding branches of which are provided with aligned spaced openings, grate hollow tubular bars supported by said frame and having their ends received by said openings, washers fixed on the ends of each rod and arranged within the frame bearing against the inner side of the adjacent angle members thereof, collars arranged'within said bars adjacent the ends thereof, a sectional rod arranged within eachv bar and passed through said collars, each rod being of a greater length than the said bar and also passed through the openings in said frame members, a flange carried by each end of each rod and also arranged within the frame member, a coil spring surrounding each end of said rod and interposed between the adjacent flange and collar, and push button switches arranged in the said frame at the opposite ends of each rod and normally spaced from the flanges thereof for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
