This invention has for a principal object the provision of a protective device for preventing access to the interior of a vault cr other depository in the event that the Walls are attacked to gain entrance, which novv is one of the methodsby whichk burglars force entrance to perpetrato thefts. As a means of accomplishing this result,the invention contemplatesthe employment of a gas discharging device adapted to operate when the Walls of the vault are attacked, to disseminate noxious gas on the interior of the vault and p revent access thereto, even though an opening inthe Wall may be made. c v
Itis also a purpose of the invention to provide a protectingdevice of thistype'whicli Will be of extremely sensitive character and adapted to operate regardless of the position of attack, or the force employed. e

Upon the drawings, the main Wall of thek vault is indicated by the reference character -l1 and the character 12 indicates an inner -15 Wall .which is spaced from the main wall by suitable spacing members 13 and 141.

Said plunger is normally held retracted and under the tension of the spring 19 by means of a flexible connection 21, secured to the upper end'of aneXtension rod 22 upon which said spring is mounted. Said plunger and spring are enclosed in a sleeve 23, ywhich has lupper shoulders 24 against Which the spring engages. A slide 25 is provided in the top of theboX 15 and has an aperture throughjwhichthe plunger 18 mayexend aid slide is provided also' With slots 26 through which guiding screws 27 extend and it Will be manifest that when said slide is in its outer postion,`the system Will be rendere'dinoperative, since vthe plunger Will'be prevented from breaking the receptacle.' `The connection 21 extends over a sheave which is positioned in a block 28 and is connected at its opposite end to a rod-29 which is housed in a sleeve 31. Said sleeve has one end secured in a block 32, which is apertured to permit the rod 29 to move therethrough. Said rod is provided With a cut-out 33 adapted to be engaged by an arm 34 of a lever 35, said arm being normaly held in engagement With the rod'by means of a spring 36 which is positioned in the block 32.'` Said lever is adapted to be operated to disengage the rod 29 by means of a'trip lever 37, which is mounted for actuating the lever 35,`an arm of which extends through the Wall part 12. Said lever 37 is operablepby means to be now described.
Said trip lever 37 is operated by aconneetion 38, which extends about a sheave 39 and is se` cured to a ring 11. Said ringv is connected by means of a plurality of Wires, or other flexible connections, 4t2 with the opposite ends of'yokes 13, the latter-'being of whiiiletree type, being pivoted'at a central point 411 to a plate extending out from the Wall spacing member 13. A Saidyokes, or Whiffletrees, 113 are operated by means of a plurality of Wires, or cords, arranged at close intervals -about the Walls of the Vault to .Operate vthe trip leve'r37.
It will benoted that these connections are arranged in the iioor and ceiling, as well as on the side walls and they may be briefly traced as follows. AReferring to Fig. 2, it will be seen that a connection 46 is secured at 47 to one oi the yokes and extends around Y sheaves Ll'at the bottom of the wallE and similar sheaves 419 at .the top, l eing directed up and down at relatively close intervals in this manner.' Another connection 5l is connected' 'at 52' to another yoke i3 and extends about sheaves 53 and 5% whereby it is directed over the area of the plate Ll5 and thence over a' nection 5l'extendstherethrough and. aroun l.

Thusran attack at any point, either inY the' wall, the ceili-ng, or the iioor will result in a discharge of noxious gas into the interior ofthe-vault, rendering the same inaccessible and the burglar will be foiled,` even though his attack may have: resulted in providing an opening through which he might otherwise enter.

VA vault protecting system, comprising a gas receptacle positioned on the interior of the vault, normally inoperative means for causing discharge of the contents of said receptacle, a flexible connection extending Vabout the iixedl walls of the vault, and devices operable by either release or pulling oi' said connection to cause operation ot said gas' dischargingV means, said devices comprising members' ofwhiilie-t'ree form having one end held. under spring tension andthe other end held by said lexibleconnection, and
mea-ns operable by pivotal movement ot' said members :tor causing operation of said gas d ischargingmeans;
2. In a vault protecting device, the coinbinationfof a vault, an actuatable` device for:
releasing gas into said vault, a plurality of pivotal members in said vault, a spring-1 .connected `to each pivotal member and arranged to swing the pivotal memberin one direction, a plurality of said wall protecting members, each disposed in'network formation over a particu-lar Wall portion of the vault, said members: being arranged' to' cover substantiallyfal'l of the wall portions of the vault, each one of said'members being connected to an individualrpivotal'v member'toy the end thereof opposite the spring connected end and' constructed and arranged to hold' such member from being swung-under the' influence of the spring, a spring actuated trigger mechanism for actuating thegas releasing device and a plurality of connections, onek from each end of the pivotal members tosaid trigger mechanism,- -whereby said trigger mechanismy is actuated by a severance'v or movement of any of the protective devices.
3. A vault protecting device, in combination with a vault, a gas releasethe'r'eior, a trigger mechanism for actuating said gas release, a flexible member extendingacross thev Wall portion, of the vault, a pivoted arm, a tension spring connected to one endk of' the pivoted arm, a flexible member connecting such end of the pivoted arm to a trigger mechanism, a .second flexible member connected to the opposite end of the pivotalv member and to the trigger mechanism, said flexible member, which extends across the vault, being connected to the last mentioned end. of the pivoted member, whereby the-trigger mechanism is actuated either by a pulling upon the iiexible member or by severance oi the flexible member.v

5. A. vault protecting device, comprising a container adapted to receive a plurality of segmental frangible gas containers, a metal ball disposed above and intermediate said gas containers and in conta-ct therewith, a plunger located immediately above said ball,
a spring for projecting said plunger into Contact with said ball to break said gas containers, mea-ns for holding said spring under compression and devices constructed and arranged to be actuated by an attempted. forcible yentry into said vault or by releasing said spring, Wherebyto release the gases Withinthe vault.v
