This invention relates to new and useful improvements in testing devices for electrical circuits and more particularly to a novel tester for railway signal blocks whereby workmen on the railway can ascertain the presence of trains in the blocks in which they are working.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a testing device of a portable nature, capable of being carried handily from place to place.
These and other important objects and advantages of the invention will readily become apparent to the reader.
In the drawings Figure 1 represents an end elevation of the case in which the outfit is to be housed.
Fig. 2 represents a side elevational view of the case in which the outfit is to be housed.
Fig. 3 represents a view disclosing the electrical connection between the electrical devices involved and their relation when con- Eil nected to rails of a trackway.
Referring to the drawings wherein like numerals designate parts, it can be seen that A refers to a trackway' including the rails B and C, the rail sections being connected together in the usual manner by electrical ties.
The novel testing outfit includes a battery 5 and an annunciator 6, clips 7 and a relay generally referred to by numeral 8. This relay includes the base 9, the coil 10, the armature 11, the contact 12, and the spring 13 for normally maintaining the armature 11 away from the coil 10 and spaced from the contact 12. The coil circuit 14 includes the clips 7 and when these clips are connected across the trackway in the manner shown in Fig. S, the outfit will be ready for operation.
When a train enters the block and bridges the rails, the coil circuit will be completed, resulting in the energization of the coil and the attraction of the armature 11. As is shown in Fig. 3, one side of the bell or annunciator 6 is connected to the armature 11, while the other side is connected to the contact 12, the connection between the last-nientioned side of the annunciator and the contacts 12 including the switch 15, and the aforementioned battery 5.
Therefore, when the armature 11 contacts with the contact 12, the annunciator circuit will be closed, resulting in the energization 'of the annunciator, warning the workmen that a` train is moving in the bloclr.
While the foregoing specification sets forth the invention in specific ter1ns,'it is to be understood that numerous changes in the shape,
size and materials may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and rscope of the invention as claimed hereinafter.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is A portable workinans testing outfit for railroad signal and gate blocks comprising an annunciator circuit including an alarm, a source of current inthe annunciator circuit, a relay including a pair of contacts normally spaced apart and serving to maintain the circuit broken, said relay' including a coil, a lead extending from each end of theA coil, and a connector on the other end of each lead, for detachable connection to a rail of a trackway.
