A needle frame 2' is secured to the carriage h by means of bolts i and is formed with series of perforations 2' for receiving needles 7'. These needles are hollow and carry threads j, as clearly shown in Figure 1. The needles are provided with enlarged endsj which abut against the needle frame and are held by screws 7' By providing a screw with a sufficiently large head, each screw may serve to secure four needles to the frame, the flange of the screw-head engaging the enlarged ends j of the needles at points spaced 90 apart on the periphery of the screw-head. When the carriage is advanced upon the fabric f carried by the fabric frame, the needles penetrate the fabric and carry the thread through a distance which depends upon the extent of movement of the slidable After the needle has penetrated the fabric, it moves into the bristles of the brush and upon reverse movement, the thread or yarn is gripped by the bristles to prevent the withdrawal of the yarn with the needles. When the needle is withdrawn from the fabric, the fabric frame 0 is moved slightly in either a vertical or horizontal plane and the needle frame again advanced into the fabric. By predetermined manipulations of the respective frames, and a suitable choice of colors for the yarns carried by the several needles, various designs and figures may be formed in the pile of the resulting article. When the fabric base is removed from the frame, the gripping of the loops of yarn by the bristles requires a pull to effect their removal. By pulling on the fabric, the portion of the yarn on theside of the fabric adjacent the needles is drawn tightly against the fabric, resulting in a reverse side, such as shown in Figure 4. After the fabric has been removed and the loops thus pulled, the latter are cut as, for instance, along the dot and dash line shown in Figure l.
It will be seen that the invention includes broadly any means for advancing and retracting a bank of needles into a suitably ositioned fabric base, there being a means or gripping the loops formed when the needles are retracted and a means for moving either or both the fabric and the needles. Although the invention has been described in. connection with the specific. construction shown in the accompanying drawings, it is not to be'limited save as defined in the appended claims.
I claim as my invention: i 1. A machine of the character described comprisingla fabric frame, a needle frame, a plurality of yarn carrying needles carried thereby, means to move one of the frames to cause the needles to penetrate the fabric, means on the fabric frame to hold the yarn frictionally after a needle has penetrated the fabric and means to move one frame relatively to the other in a plane parallel thereto.
