- This invention relates to electric circuit fuse cut outs'of the type comprising a body portion adapted to be secured to a wall, panel r pole, and a removable use carrier adapted to be insertedin said body portionfor the v purpose of bringingcontacts on the carrier bridged by the Jfuse, into engagement :with contacts inthe body portion, to which circuit main ends are connected.
The object of the inventionis to provide an improved form of usecut' out of the type above mentioned, said improved form comprising a body portion of insulating'material adapted to be secured to a wall, panel or il VAl pole `and containing contacts adapted to be connected with circuit main ends, and a fuse Acarrier hinged to said body portion so as to be capable of insertion inthe latter to bring contacts it carries into engagement with the 20 contacts of said body portion.
The improved form of fuse cutout, comprising the invention will however be more particularly described in conjunction with the accompanying drawing wherein Figure 1 is anelevation and A LFigure `2 a plan view of the fuse cut out according to the invention,

The fuse carrier 3 is provided with a neck Vportion 2l having a boss or, projection 5, at each side said bosses or projections being adapted to seat in recesses 6 oneat each side of afvertical slot 7 in an extension at one side of the body portion 1 and thereby provide a hinge by means of which the body portion 1 and the carrier 3 are' pivoted` together so that the latter can be swung up into, to complete an electric circuit, or be moved down out of the body portion 1 to brealr said circuit without being disconnected from the body portion. i f j Y Internally the body portion-'1 is iitted vwith Y a pair of terminals 8, separatedy by a wall or rib 2O of insulating material integral with saidY body portion, the terminals 8 each containing a hole 8a into which is passed through the body portion 1 the end` 9 of a circuit main, said end 9 being secured in the terminal 8 by a screw 10. Each terminal 8 and a spring contact 11 in engagement therewith are clamped to a lug 12 on the body portion 1 by a screw 13 which passesv through'the lug 12 and screws into the terminal, each spring contact 11 extending downwards roni between the terminal 8 and lug 12 and then outwards and upwards in a curved formation as shown. v
The carrier 8 has on its upper portion ribs or lugs 14 to which are clamped by means of screws -15 and nuts 16 further springcontacts 17 the latter being held between the nuts 16 and the rib or lugs 14 and curving downwards to correspond tothe formation of the outer portion of spring contacts 11, the curve of which isystruck` from the centre Vof the hinge between the body portion 1 and carrier 3. p
The screws 15 and nuts 16 provide terminals for the fuse wire 24 which passes through side recesses 18a and a hole 18 in the carrier 3 from one terminal to the other thereon, also said terminals are separated from each other by a wall or rib 19 integral with the carrier 3, said wall or rib 19 with the wall or vrib 2O oi the body 1 completely separating the pairs of contacts 11 and 17, when the contacts are engaged with each other.v
The wall or rib 19 has'projecting from its edge a tongue 25 which engages in a recess 26 formed in the inner surface of the body 1 and the edgeof the wall or rib 20, so as to eiectively separate the pairs of engaged contacts 11 and 17, or if desired the wall or rib 19 can be grooved to pass upon a tongue projecting from the inner surface of the body 1 and its wall or rib 20.
The carrier 3 also has formed integral therewith side shield portions 21 which protect the engaged contacts 11, 17 from outside iniiuences.
The lower ends of the contacts 17 are formed with outwardly turned portions 17a which act as buiiers when the contacts 17 are being brought into engagement with the contacts 11 and save shock and jar to the porcelain of which the body portion 1 and carrier 3 are made. Also the upper ends of the contacts 11 on the body portion 1 are turned slightly inwards, while the contacts 17 of the carrier 3 are formed with outwardly curved or bulged portions 17 b which spring over the inturned ends of the contacts 11 and hold the latter and the contacts 17 together and the carrier 3 within the body portion 1.
The carrier 3 is provided with a slot or recess 22 preferably in a rib 23 by means of which the hooked end of a rod, or a pin on the latter can be engaged and the'carrier swung downwards or upwards on its hinge, in order to disengage the contacts 17 from the contacts 11, or to re-engagevthe former with the latter, as may be required.y
The carrier 3 is also provided with a hole 23a in which the hooked end of a rod or a pin on the latter may be inserted, in order to lift the bosses or projections 5 of the carrier 3 from the recesses 6 of the body portion 1, so as to enable the carrier to be removed and lowered` when it is desired to renew or adjust the fuse wire 24, or for any other purpose. The shape of ythe slot or recess 22 is such thatat the termination of the upward or downward swing of the carrier 3 on its hinge or pivot, the hook or pin of the operating rod, slips out of said slot or recess, and thereby prevents undue forcev being transmitted to the device during operation thereof.
What we do claim and desire to obtain by Letters Patent of the United States of America is 1. A fuse cut-out for electric circuits comprising a body portion of insulating material fitted with contacts adapted to be connected with circuit main ends, and adapted to be secured to a wall, panel or pole, and a fuse carrier of insulating material fitted with contacts connected by a fusewire, detachably hinged to said body portion so that the carrier contacts may be engaged with or engaged from the contacts of the body portion without disconnecting saidcarrier from the body portion, while at the same time permitting bodily removal of said carrier for renewal of the fuse, said body being provided with side rshield portions for protecting the contacts which it carries from outside influences.
2. A fuse cut out for electric circuits comprising a body portion of insulating material fitted with contacts adapted to be connected with circuit main ends, and adapted to be secured to a wall, panel, or pole, and a fuse carrier of insulating material fitted with contacts connected by a fuse wire, detachably hinged to said Ybody portion so that the carrier contacts may be engaged with or disengaged from the contactsof the body portion without disconnecting said carrier from the body portion, while at the same time permitting bodily removal of said carrier for the removal of the fuse, the fuse carrier being provided with a recess and with a hole for the reception of an operating rod, the hole being adjacent the hinge, for lifting the carrier from the body portion and the recess being remote from the hinge for Vswinging said carrier relative to said body portion, said' recess being so formed as to let the operating tool slip out near either eXtreme of the Vrange of movement of said carrier.
3. A fuse cut out for electric circuits comprising a body portion and a fuse carrier constructed to be hingedly and detachably inserted therein with interengaging contacts on said body portion, and said carrier having portions shaped to conform to a curve struck lfrom the centre about which the hinging or swinging movement is performed.

In an electric circuit fuse cut out of the kind described. a terminal for the reception of a circuit main end. a fixed body portion having a. lug of insulating material behind which said mainend is clamped, and having a spring contact extending downwardly and outwardlvfrom said terminal to clear said lug. a fuse carrier, a contact on the latter, said spring contact being arranged to be in the path of travel of the contact on said fuse carrier when the latter is inserted in said body portion.
5. In an electric circuit fuse cut out, a bodv portion terminal and a contact as claimed in claim 4, and 'wherein said contact being gripped between the lug and the terminal and having a portion curved to conform to a curve struck from the centre of a hinge on which the fuse carrier operates, when being swung into or out of the body portion.
6. In an electric circuit fuse cutout' a contact secured on a fuse carrier hinged to a body portion, said contact being shaped to conform to a curve struck from the centre of the hinge between the body portion and the carrier, so as to engage with a similarly shaped portion of a contact on said body portion.
7. In an Ielectric circuit fuse cut out a fuse carrier contact as in claim 6, having a buii'er at' its lower end, for engaging the vlower end of a contact on the body portion,
and also having an upper outwardly curved portion for engaging over the upper `end of the Contact on said body portion.
