Description
Dec. 16, 1930. E. c. SASSER l SAFETY RAZOR- Fled June 23. 1928 UnfPatented Dec. 16, 19304 -y ',Enwnnnc. sAssER, or wAsrnNG'roN, Drsrnrc'r or COLUMBIA SAFETY RAZOR Y y Vapplicati@.111ml :une 2s, Myinventionrelates to lnew and useful iinprovements insafety razors, and has for anobJectT to provide a razor wherein 'the `lolade vmayv be very quickly insertedy and very i y Vfvquickly removed when'a new blade is desired.
- V,Still anotherobject Yof the invention is `to provide a safety razor that will accommo-` datek both athin bladefand a thick blade n 1 without.any.changesoradjustments of the 10v razor.' f f. v Still anotherobjectvof the invention is to provide; a safety'razorwherein the' front, or
whatk might be termed the cover,:when pulled downfagainstthegblade, willact as a face Aor Y jaw of a vise and-.thus clamp the blade tightly and entirely .across its length.
Still anotherfob'ject'fof the invention is to y. provide a safety razor whereinthe blade is originally'positioned at an angleto the back 2Q and as the cover-is pulled down on theface of the blade, it will cause the blade to curve inwardly at the center 'and flex or bendvery slightly along its cutting edge, away from the back or guard, thus allowing a deeper cut stroke.
, vv2,5 tin till another. object of: thelinvention is to y 4Q across its vface just behind the cutting edge,
so k'that thebladeis very, rigid as it is pulled over the hairs of the face. o
With these and other objects in View, the
L l .invention consists in certain new land novel 4,5 arrangements and combination of parts asA 192s.v serial No. 287,782. l
will be hereinafter more fully described 'and pointed out in the claims.
Referring nowto the drawings showing a preferred embodiment of the invention,
Fig. l is a front View. Fig. 2 is a vertical section. Fig'. 3 is a backview A v Fig. 4 is an outside face view. A Fig'. 5 is an inside face view, andV Fig. 6 is an outside'view, similar vto but vwith the cover removed. f l Referring now more specifically Vto 'the' severalviews, there is shown a handle 1 in'tferf nally threaded at 2, to receive 'the threaded post '3 secured at its upper end to tlie'inside m of the cover 4. This cover 4,as`wi'll be noticed is formed of metal and has'the flat face 5 and then' rounds over to forni the rear face 6, wh'ileits front edge is vbent slightly down: gardly as at 7, as may beclearly seen in rll`he handlefis threaded to the post of the cover and needs never be removed, as willv be explained, but only loosened'when it is desired to remove or replace the blade. This latfface of the cover is provided withtlie'y two little slots orcuts 8, as mayfbeseen Ain F ig. 4, so that there will be .resiliency given to the edge 7 when it is pulled down against the blade 9. 'A y The two sides of the cover are 'bent downwardly to form the smallrim's'lO'as may also be seen in Fig. l. From this'it will be seen that the cover, at its rear, forms what might be termed a small chamber into which the back 11'may be inserted, which back will now be described.
Referringespecially to Figs. 5 and 6,it will 'be seen that this back l1 comprises'the plate 12, while the lower edge is cutout to forin the lingers or guards 13 as is theordinary practice inthe construction of safety razors. A piece of the back, Fig. 6,is cut out and slotted as at 14, to provide a slightly upstanding lug or projection 15, whichmay be dished out on 'its upperv surface as at 16;
Y to partly receive the post 3 ofthe cover.,V
vTo the rear surface of. the back there is within the 'cupped upper: edge 20k of the han- Y dle 1. c The hub, of course, is'slotted to receive the post 3 when the cover is placed down in rposition over the back 11.. It might be here mentioned that onthe' face of the. .backl plate" 11 there are two small-pins 21,'toprevent the lateral movement of the blade 9 when the v blade is placed lin position on fthe'. plate., y j j "blade may bequickly removed and a newvone quickly-- inserted. Then Vythe cover ,will be Also, at the lower edge of the back plate yand on the front face thereof, are the small stops; n 22 which hold the plate, and it will be understood that the cutting edge of -thefbladelis placedV` downwardly underneath these, two,
small stops." .K n
n AsV may be seenin Fig.f6,'the`bladfzfalso has'the slots 23 to receive thepins 21, while in the upper edge'and centrally thereof', the blade is slightly cut out as at 24, tov bear against the lug 15 and center itself there` i avan v On the rear fof thejbackjplate.,11, theregare l I' provided the two small spring arms25', which l have their outerfends 26 projecting slightlyk above ,the top edge ofthe platellffffhese `ends v26bearagainstwthe rear edge ofthe.
i .The inserting 'and' removal of a `blade is as follows: llhe backplate will be held in the left hand andthe blade 9 slipped under' the stops 22, the little vslots 23 of thefbla'de 'restingunder thepins 2l and thecut out portion V24, that is the wallsv thereof, resting on and against .thesides ofthelugl, ABy having f this lug Lupstanding, the'blade will rest'v at anangle with relation to the back, rather than'parallel therewith, 'The handle 1y then taken in the right hand, (the postof the coverwillhave been threaded therein),
and thefc'over will then be slipped'over they back plate and the blade, they post `1 fitting yin thecutfout portionv18 of the'iplate, and
`thefcut-out portion ofthe hub.
f The" handlel is then screwed vor :tightenedl up, the upper edge of the'handle Vbearing against the hub 19y forcing the backplate into the cover, against the spring tension of the -arms 25. Now, the lower edge 7'of'gthe cover 4will bear downwardly across the razor blade in aviselile'grip and as the handle is` tightened, the resiliency. ofk the. cover will cause the same to elongate slightly and the blade vbeing set Vin 4anran'gle, will also have fa' tendency to be forced downwardly against theV stops 22.- Also,r as the pressure oftherV from the guard, thus effecting the desired flexing adjustment of the blade with relation e Y to the guard. v
To remove the blade it is simply necessary to unscrew the handle partway and slip the post with the cover rearwardly with the rightl hand, leaving the back plate and the blade in thjeleft vhand,'after which 4the newjblade may be quickly inserted and -thecover applied.
'Fromfthe foregoing it will be seen that Ik have provided asafety razor .wherein the old slipped down over the blade'and the handle Y tightened, which ...will force the blade tightly Y down into position, and'will grip thel same with a vise-like grip throughout'the entire 1length; Lastly, by a continued tightening ofA the handle, the blade will be adj ustedsli'ghtly with relation li/fany vslight changes might.beimadegwith- 'out in any way departing fromthe spiritand scope of the invention."
" lHaving thus described rmy?n'ivention, what l claim as new and desire to secure by Ltrs Patent is -V 1. A safety razor comprisingfasupporting member having aslot "leading in from` theV edge thereof, a cover member having down;I
