IMPROVEMENT IN HARVESTER FINGER-BARS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 178,540, dated J une 13, 1876; application filed February 21, 1876.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, CHARLES W. MARSH and WILLIAM W. MARSH, of Sycamore, De Kalb county, State of lllinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Carrier- Platforms for Harvesters, of which the following is a full description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a bottom view. Fig. 2 is a crosssection; Fig. 3, a detail, showing a slight modification.

The object of this invention is to provide a metal shield at the front of the platform, which will cover and protect the cutter-bar and the bottom ofthe carrier-platform which also, from its angular shape and construction, shall strengthen the cutter-bar so as to prevent its sagging out of line while in use, and the upper edge of which will also provide a line upon which to set the bottoms of the guardfingers.

In the drawings, A represents the bottomrear bar of the carrier-frame 5 D, the metallic su1')porting-shield E, the guard-fingers.

in ordinary construction the protectingboards A are nailed to the bar B, and in order to avoid unnecessary wear these boards and the bar B are chamfered off; but, whether chamfered or not, in use they are liable to get loose, to catch stubble between joints, and to wear away rapidly. To avoid these difficulties, and to strengthen the connection of the parts, the metallic supporting-shield D is applied as shown, and its projecting lip or edge a is made to fit against the lower edge of the guard-fingers E, so as to support them and to form a ready means of keeping them in line when attached to a wooden bar, and being constructed in an angular form, and thus applied to the bar, it supports, strengthens, and keeps that in line. This shield D also protects the front side of the bar B, and the ends of the boards A, and gives a smooth surface for bending down stubble, so as to avoid friction, and itprevents the wearing away of the bar B and of the boards A, so as to loosen the nails or become uneven by such wear.

The platform is supported on its outer end by an ordinary grain-wheel, and its inner end is attached to the main or elevating frame of a harvesting-machine in the usual manner.

WVhat we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows:

The finger-bar B, provided with the metallic shield D, bent to support the under side of the guard-fingers, and to support the bottom of the platform, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
