' RICHARD J. SIMS, OF OTTAWA, ONTARIO, CANADA MILK-IBOTTLE HOLDER Application filed November 1, 1927. Serial No. 230,309.
This present invention relates to new and useful improvements in a milkbottle holder and has for itsprimary object the provision of a device of simple and inexpensive con struction which may be readily manufactured at small cost and retailed at a popular price with good profit. Y
Another object of the invention resides in theprovision of a device of the character stated which iscomposed'of the minimum number of parts, may be readilyand firmly mounted on a wall, a door frame or other stationarysupport, or-removed, as desired.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision ofa device ofthe character stated which is of such a construction that the milk bottle may be readily placed therein or withdrawn, Without the necessity of employing the second hand to raise the cover or close the latter. v v i A still further object of the invention resides in the provision of a device of the character stated which is provided with curved or inc-lined lips on the bottle receivingpockets and the cover, to assureautomatic raising of the latter as the bottle is inserted and easy movement of the bottle into position in the pocket, after which the cover returns by gravity to closed position over the bottle.
The invention has fora still further object, theprovision of a device-of the character stated which includes a cover mounted in such a manner as to be limited in its movement toward open position and thus prevented from remaining open, after a bottle has been seated in its pocket, the cover also being of such form as to completely close or cover over all of the bottle receiving pockets as well as the ticket or coin pocket, when the cover is in closed position.
To the accomplishment of these and related objects, as will become apparent as the de scription proceeds, in invention resides in the construction, com ination and arrangement of parts as shall be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
The invention will be best understood and can be more clearly described when reference is had to the drawings forming a part of this disclosure, wherein like characters indicate like parts. throughout the several views.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a plan of the milk bottle holder;
Figure 2 is a front elevation thereof;
Figure 8 is a longitudinal vertical section through theholder with a milk bottle indicated by dotted lines, in each ofthe bottle receiving pockets. thereof.
Figure 4: is a side elevation of the holder, with the cover shown in raised or open position.
Referring more in detail to the drawin s, it is to be noted that the structure of the device includes a bracketvi-ded on its upper edge the upstanding lugs or fingers 12 with openings 13 therethrough to accommodate securing or attaching members for firmly holding the device in position on a wall, door frame or other stationary support. If preferred, however, the device may be simply hung on projecting supporting members extending through the inverted key-slots 15 provided in the enlarged or thick upper portions 14 of the lugs or fingers 12. It is apparent that when both means are employed for attaching the bracket plate 11, they will co-operate in holding the device firmly in position and the strain will be divided between said means.
Extending outwardly from the bracket plate 11, at a right angle and in a horizontal plane, is-the plate 16 forming the body of the device. The body plate 16 connects with the bracket plate 11, by means of a pair of longitudinally slotted arms 17, near the o F posite sides or ends of the device. The body plate is depressed at its opposite sides or ends and shaped to form a pair of depending milk bottle receiving pockets 18, open at both the top and-bottom and also having open forward sides 19 with inclined and curved flanges 20 at the upper corners of said open forward sides 19, to permit a milk bottle to be inserted in the pocket without difficulty. It is also to be seen from the drawings, that the pockets are of proper size and shape to permit the neck of the bottles to extend throughthe open bottom ofthe pockets while plate 11 having prothe bottles are suspended in the pockets 18 with their enlarged, rounded upper ends resting on the inwardly turned and inclined bottom walls 21 of said pockets 18. The body plate 16 is further provided with a depressed central portion forming a ticket or coin pocket 22, which is curved upwardly from its centerto the forward and rear edges of the body plate 16, while the side or end walls 28 are vertical. Appropriate drain openings 24 are provided in the curved bottom wall of the ticket or coin pocket 22.
A single, fiat cover 25 is provided for the entire body and when in closed position, and close the ticket or coin pocket 22, as well as both of the milk bottle pockets 18, the depending curved or arcuate flanges 26 at the ends of the cover 25, fitting againstthe outer faces of the milk bottle pockets 18. Upwardly offset lips 27 are formed on the cover 25 at the forward edge thereof and opposite the pockets 18, with the lips 27 connecting with the main portion of the cover 25, by means of inclined walls 28, which latter are engaged by a milk bottle and the top or cover 25 thus automatically raised by the bottle, without the necessity of employing the other hand or any other means for raising the cover 25. This construction of cover 25, also permits removal of the milk bottles from the pockets 18, by simply tilting the bottles and drawing them forward, through the open forward side of the pockets 18, the cover 25, again being automatically raised by the top of'the bottle or bottles. A small lip 29 projects from the centre of the forward edge of the cover 25 for finger of the operator to engagement by the sufficiently to gain access raise the cover 25 to the ticket or coin pocket 22. The hinge for the cover 25 consists of a pair of rearwardly directed ribs or fingers 30 on the upper face of the cover 25 and having downturned rear ends 31 engaged in the slotted arms 17 and working on the transverse hinge pins 32 engaged therethrough. The upward swinging movement of the cover 25 is limited by engagement of the ribs or fingers 30 with the enlarged or thick upper portions 14 of the lugs or fingers 12, before the cover 25 reaches a vertical position or passes a dead center, thus assuring automatic closing of the cover 25, when pressure against the under side thereof is relieved, as by seating of a bottle in one of the pockets 18 or complete removal of the bottle.
As the construction of the device has thus been described in detail, brief reference is now had to lts use and m-odus operand1: The dev1ce is secured 1n posltlon on a permanent support, as described and the cover 25 normally remains in closed position. To insert a milk bottle in one of the pockets 18, it is simply necessary to engage the top of the the inclined wall 28 of the cover, over the pocket 18. Then, as the bottle is moved into position in the pocket 18, the cover 25 raises to permit the bottle to pass and again returns to closed position as the bottle comes to rest in the pocket 18, the bottle being suspended on the bottom wall 21 of the pocket 18 and depending therefrom in a vertical plane. To remove the bottle, it is simply necessary to tilt the same, to raise the forward portion of the top thereof and thus permit the enlarged top of the bottle to pass over the lips 20, while the cover 25 is raised by the bottle and the'latter is drawn forwardly and upwardly. At any time desired, the cover 25 may be raised to place tickets or coins in the pocket 22 or remove the contents of said pocket 22, without disturbing the pockets 18 or bottles therein.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be manifest that a milk bottle holder is provided that will fulfill all the necessary requirements of such a device, but as many changes could be made in the above description and many apparently widely different embodiments of my invention constructed within the scope of the appended claim without departing from the spirit or scope there of, it is intended that all matters contained in the said accompanying specification and drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limited sense.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent is As a new article of manufacture, a holder including a one piece body constructed to provide a depending pocket open at its front side and having a bottom inturned flange inclined on its inner edges only; the material at the corners of the said pocket being turned out to form arcuate inturned flanges; the said body having a perforated arcuate depressed portion; and a cover hinged on said body to simultaneously close said pocket and the said arcuate depressed portion of the body; said cover having an upwardly offset portion at its outer edge over and projecting past the open front side of the said pocket.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my RICHARD J. SIMS. [Ls] signature.
