Description

B. S. DE LONG Dec. 16', 1930.
GARMENT Filed April 12 1928 Patented Dec. 16, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE GARMENT Application filed April 12,
\ This invention relates to childrens and womens garments in the nature of underwear, dresses etc. I
It is an object of this invention to provide a garment adapted to fit the body of a wearer and having a seat opening in the rear thereof,
- and a flap adapted normally to cover said opening and to be held in place without use of buttons and buttonholes, clasps, snap fasteners etc., and yet being capable of being operated to expose the seat opening in the garment.
Another object of the invention is to provide a garment for womenand children which will fit the body of the wearer and is expansible at the rear side of the waist thereof, to accommodate the garment to bending or similar movement by the wearer.
To these ends, the invention consists in the novel parts and novel combinations of parts,
hereinafter defined in the claims and described in the following specification, made-in v,
tain of the parts being illustrated in one position in full lines, and in dotted lines;
' Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on the line 3-'3 of. Fig. 2, as is indicated by the arrows Fig. 4 is a horizontal section taken on the line 44: of Fig. 2, as is indicated by the arrows;
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a portion of another position in the garment illustrated in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4,
taken from the inside of the garment looking outwardly Fig. 6 is a perspective view similar to Fig. 5, of a slightly different embodiment of the invention, and
Fig. 7 is a horizontal sectional view similar 1928. Serial 1%. 269,401. v
to Fig. 4 of the garment embodied in the structure shown in Fig. 6.
Referring to the drawings, Figs. 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, a childs or womans under-garment A is illustrated which is adapted to lit the body of the wearer and which may be supported as by shoulder straps 8 in the usual manner. A seat opening 9 is provided at the rear side of the garment acro'ssthe back thereof. and from adjacent the waistline of the garment to the crotch portion thereof. A flap 10 projects downwardly from the waistline of the gar ment into the seat opening some little distance. To cover the opening 9, a rectangular flap or drop seat 11 is provided at the rear of the garment. This flap 11 extends upwardly "from adjacent the lower portion of the rear side of the garment to a point just above the waistline and the top edge of the flap -11 has formed thereon an elastic cord holder 12- forming a continuous passage from one edge of the flap to the other edge thereof. The cord holder 12 is preferably formed by either bending over the extreme upper edge of the flap 11 on itself and sewing the bent over portion to the main portion thereof, or else the holder may be formed by sewing an extra strip along the top edge of the flap 11. Preferably a double band of nonelectric material is sewed to the waistline of the garment to form a cord holder 13 which extends from one side of the garment across the front thereof, to the other side of the garment. An endless elastic cord 14 fits within the passages in the two cord holders l2 and 13 and through slits 15 provided at each side of the garmentrearwardly from the rear ends of the cord holder 13. 1 p
When the garment is being worn by a. child or woman, the waist portion will be filled out to stretch the elastic cord14 sli htly and slits will be formed at the sides of the garment projectin downwardly from the waistline "thereof. he fiap 11 will thus normallyextend over the seat opening 9 as is indicated in full lines Figs. 1,. 2 and 3 with the upper edge of the flap adjacent the waistline of the arment to entirely close the seat opening. en it becomes desirable to expose the seat opening, the flap 11 may be lowered tothepo 7 position un sition illustrated in dotted 'nes Figs. 1 and 2, and the elastic cord 14 will have suflicient elasticity to permit the flap to be swung downwardly about a portion of the rear side of the garment below the waistline as an axis to expose the entire seat opening 9 of the garment. When released, the elastic cord 14 will again act to return the flap 11 to its normal upwardy swung position. The cord holders 12 and 13 will gather slightly at the waistline of the garment to permit expansion of the waistline as the wearer of the garment bends over 9r otherwise moves about. Also as the In Figs. 6 and 7 a slightly modified form of garment B is shown. In the garment 'B, a flap 16 forming a drop seat is provided which is similar in all respects to the flap 11. with the exception that a double elastic cord holder 17 is provided at the upper edge of the fiap, rather than a single cord holder 12. Also instead of providing a single cord holder 13 at the sides and front of the garment, the garment B is provided with a single strip 18 which extends across the sides and front of the garment and is stitched at 19 along its two edges to the front of the garment and is stitched b stitching 20 at its center to the-two sides of t e garment. ,The central stitching 20 at the sides of the garment leaves the edges of the strip 18 free and a plurality of eyes 21 are provided in double rows in the strip 18 at the two sides of the garment. An elastic cord 22, formed as a double loop, projects through the double openings in the cord holder 17 and through the double rows of eyes 21 and through openings 23 equipped with eyes in the sides of the garment rearwardly from the rear ends of the strip 18. The cord 22 will thus extend from one side of the garment rearwardly across theback of the garment to the other side of the garment. Inasmuch as the strip 18 is stitched to the garment B in at its central portion 20, it willbe seen tha the cordcan be readily extended through the various eyes 21 without difliculty. When the double elastic cord 22 is used, the upper edge 6f the flap 16 will be given slightly, more rigidity than is the case where the single cord 14 is used. Thus in the garment B, there will be no tendency for the upper edge of the fla to turn or twist. The flap 16,- forming the op seat of the garment B, will act like the flap 11 in all respects to close the seat opening in the rear of the garment, or to allow thedrop seat to be lowered to expose the seat opening. Also in the garment B, the sides of the waist portion of the garment, as well as the back of the garment, may be expanded to accommodate the garment to movement by the wearer thereof.
In both the garment A and in the garment B, a holder 13 or a cloth band 18 is provided which extends completely around the front of the garments so that the pull at the Waistline of thegarments will be exerted against a cloth'band at the waist of the garments, rather than against the main material of the garments themselves. of the garments will therefore not be unduly expanded and the shape of the garments will be maintained.
The invention has beenamply demonstrated in actual practice and has been found to be very successful for the purposes intended. The construction is cheap and simple.
It will, of course, be understood that various changes may be made in the form, details, arrangement and proportions of the various parts without departing from the scope of the present invention.
