IMPROVEMENT IN SELVAGE-GUARDS FOR LOOMS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 178,377, dated J une 6, .1876 application filed March 6, 1876.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN H. MILLS, of Lisburn, in the county of Cumberland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Selvage-Guard for Looms, of which the following is a specification My invention is a wire finger, with a springlever fitted to a little block or plate, to be so attached to the loom-temple that the finger projects down past the selvage at the point where the filling is beaten up, so that the shuttle draws the filling around said finger until it arrives at the box on the other side, when the reed strikes the spring-lever, and raises the finger out of the loop after the shuttle enters the box. The guard moves along with the temple relatively to the cloth, so that it is always in the right position. There is a guard on each side for each selvage. The object is to make the selvage more uniform and regular than it is ordinarily made.

Figure l is a plan view of my improved selvage-guard attachment. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, and Fig. 3 is a section of Fig. 1 on line a a7.

A represents the guard-finger, which projects downward from an arm, B, of a wire arranged in a plate or block, (J, to turn on the axis D, and having a kind of spring-lever, E, rising up in suitable position to be pressed back by the wood portion of the reed when it beats up, so as to raise the finger above the cloth-line at that time, to free the filling from the finger, which, until that time, draws around said finger, to protect the edge of the selvage from it. When the reed goes back the finger drops again, ready for the next operation.

The block or plate 0 is to be constructed in any approved way or form for attaching to the temple.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 7 In combination with the plate G, adapted to be attached to a loom-temple, a wire s'elvage-protector, consisting of the finger A, spring-lever E, and pivot D, whereby said lever is adapted to be pressed back by the reedframe as the lay beats up, and raise the finger above the selvage, said finger being restored to its proper position by the action of the spring upon the retreat of the lay, as shown and described JOHN l MILLS.
