Description

H. H. HALE &. E. A. SHAW.
BARREL CRESSEI'I'. V No. 178,293. Patented J'une6,1876.
g4 Mama; I j- N.PE|'ERS, PNOTO-UTHOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON. D Q
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
HENRY H. HALE AND EDWIN A. SHAW, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
lMPROVEMENT IN BARREL-CRESSETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 78,293, dated June 6, 1876; application filed May 9, 1876.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, HENRY H. HALE and EDWIN A. SHAW, both of the city of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stoves for Heating Barrels, which improvements are fully set forth in the following specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing.
Our invention relates to a device for heating barrels, composed of a receptacle for the fuel and a draft-cylinder and hood, whereby a slow and uniform combustion is obtained, the heat well retained in the barrel, and the flames drawn inwardly, so. as to prevent the charring of the barrel or cask, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a vertical section of our improved heater arranged within a barrel. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section in line a: at, Fig. 1.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in each of the figures.
A represents the fuel-receptacle, preferably composed of a metallic cylinder stiffened by hoops a and. uprights a, and having its lower portion perforated 5 but, if desired, an ordinary coopers cresset may be employed. B represents the draft-cylinder placed upon the fuelreceptacle A, so as to form a vertical continuation thereof. The cylinder B may be formed in one piece with or permanently secured to the fuel-receptacle; but We prefer to make the cylinder B detachable therefrom for convenience in handling the apparatus. 0 is an annular shield or hood secured to the upper end of the cylinder B, and made sufficiently large to cover the cask to be heated. The cylinder B is provided with a bail, b, to which a chain can be attached, which is run over a pulley for raising and lowering the cylinder. The lower end of the latter is guided into the fuel-receptacle A by inclined ears 0, secured to the upper end of the receptacle A.
The receptacle A being supplied with shavings or other fuel, the cask to be heated is placed over the same, when the draft-cylinder and hood B are arranged in place, as clearly shown in Fig. l. The fuel being ignited, the cylinder B causes a sufficient upward draft to draw the flames inwardly, so that, even when an open cresset is used, instead of the perforated fuel-receptacle, the flames will be prevented from charring the cask, which generally takes place when the cask is heated by means of the ordinary open cresset alone. The perforated receptacle A is, however, preferably used, as it better confines the shavings ordinarily used for fuel, and by limiting the supply of air retards the combustion, and finally prevents the ashes from spreading.
The hood 0 serves to retain the heat within the cask, and prevents any upward draft around the outside of the fuel -receptaclc, thereby confining the flames to the latter.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. A stove for heating barrels, composed of the fuel-receptacle A and draft-cylinder B, provided with annular shield or hood 0, substantially as and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth. 7
2. The combination, with the fuel-receptacle A, provided with inclined ears 6, of the detachable draft-cylinder B and hood 0, substantially as and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
HENRY H. HALE. EDWIN A. SHAW.
