ROOFING ROLL Filed July 51 1929 INVEN'fEIR Henry Kizlber JVZ HTTBRNEY Patented Nov. 11, 1930 HENRY KIELBERG, OF -MARTI1\TS FERRY, onioyassrenon 'ro STEEL "con PORATIOIN, on WHEELING, WEST VIRGINIA, A -conronn'rron "or DELAWARE 1 ROOFING ROLL" Application filed July 31, 1929. ser a ism. 382,524.
This invention relates to roofing rolls, and the primary object thereof is to provide an improved structure of roll which eliminates the usual connecting shank between the heads of the roll.
A further object of the invention is to provide a roll structure wherein the sheet metal or other roofing material can be easily and quickly connected to the independent roll heads.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a roll structure which is of simple construction and in which the heads thereof can be produced in a stamping operation.
In describing the invention'in detail, reference is herein had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation, parts being shown in section, illustrating the manner in which the roofing material is applied to the heads;
Figure 2 is a section on line 22, Fig. 1;
Figure 3 is a similar view showing the material in the final stage of its securement to. the heads;
' Figure 4 isan inner side elevation of one of the heads; 1
Figure 5 is an edge elevation of one of the heads, partly broken away and in section; and
Figure 6 is a top plan view of one of the heads.
In proceeding in accordance with the present invention, 'a pair of similar, heads are employed, each of drum-like formation, having a circular body 1 of dished disk form, providing a peripheral seat 2 disposed at a right angle to the plane of said body, said seat having less diameter than that of the periphery of the disk 1 and being formed with struck-out pointed or V-shaped tongues 3. Said tongues 3 extend outwardly from the periphery of the seat 2 and are preferably located at diametrically opposite points,
as shown in Fig. 4;. It will be understood, however, that the location of said tongues and the number thereof may be varied as de sired. v
Each of the disks 1 is formed with a pair 0 of perforations 7, for a purpose now to be described. {Referring to Fig. Iofthe draw: 1ngs,'i't will be noted that a housing or; frame structure-composed of spaced standards 5 is provided, a,pair of -face plates 9 being mounted on stubshafts' 10 j ournaled in the standards 5. Said face plates 9 are provided with lugs or pins 8 which are adapted to engage in the perforations 7 of the heads. A-pulley 6, driven by any suitable source of power, is secured to one of the shafts 10.
In operation, the heads are placedonthe face plates, as shown in Fig. 1, and are held against outward movement relative to said face plates. One endof thesheet metal, or roofing material, R is first secured to one of the tongues 3 of each of the heads, and the tongues are then bent downwardly, as shown in Fig. 2, which clamps the end of the material against the seats 2. 7
Following the bending of the tongues 3, as above described, the heads are then given one-half revolution to bring the oppositely disposed tongues 3 in the position shown in v Fig. 2 in which the tongues also pierce the material R, following which the last mentioned tongues are bent downwardly so that all the tongues occupy the position shown in Fig. 3. In this manner an end of the roofing material is effectively anchored to each of the heads, following which power is applied to the pulley 6 to rotate the heads and metal upon the latter. r
From the foregoing it will be seen that the resultant structure is similar to the usual roofing roll or spool, but is without the usual connecting shank connecting the spool heads. Thus, the invention enables the rolls to be down into seated relation to said endporformed in a more economical and expeditious positively connected one i theplanepf the body, each seathaving there tion for anchoring said material, portions of 7 said heads being adapted to be abutted by the oppositelateral edges of the material and said .heads' being held bysaid material in their properly spaced relation. p v a j 2. In a roofing roll, oppositely facingme tallici heads, each, head comprising a sheet v metal body o'f'dished-disk form'providing'a peripheral seat disposed at a right angle to in outwardlystruek tongues adaptedtopro-H V ;ject'-through the inner end portion of the sheet material to be ound thereonand then l I to be bent down into clamping overlying re- V 15 iation to said end portion foranchoring said I I "20 -v RY ELB Ra,
,ins e material in place, said heads being maine tained in their proper relative positions by said material.
. "In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature."
