against deterioration; economy; avoidance of damage to the apparatus, and property of being fireproof. The chlorinated hydrocarbons hitherto used for this purpose ofier the advantage of being incombustible, and with almost all of them the extraction of fat can be effected under suitable conditions, while the fibers are largely protected against deterioration by the degreasing process. Nevertheless, the use of the said hydrocarbons has not been generally adopted for the purpose in question, as the members of this class of bodies boiling at .a temperature below C. are causing, great losses of the solvents owing to their volatility, and because the higher-boiling members, under the con-. ditions used in practice, strongly attack the apparatus, especially those made of iron.
Now I have found that the ethylene chloride CH Cl=CH Cl, in spite of its boiling point of above 80 (1., is extremely stable towards the action of Water vapor and J oxygen, even in the presence of metals, metal oxides, of bodies having a large surface and other bodies of a catalytic action. It is a perfect material to be scoured against deterioration, does not attack the apparatus, is not liable to take fire and allows an extensive recovery of the solvent used.
The following example serves to illustrate my invention, butit is not intended to limit it thereto:
In an extractor of 8 com. capacity '800 kg.
of raw wool are washed at a temperature of 60 C. with ethylene chloride until the liquid flowing off is free from grease, which occurs in a very short time. The solvent is then run off at the bottom, and the portions left in the wool are eliminated therefrom by flooding the material with hot water. s
