This invention relates to the finishing of Louis and, similar heels and particularly to the shaping of the shank portion of such a heel or that which extends forward from the breast of the heel toward or along the shank of-the shoe. I
\ It is the objectofthe present invention to provide a machine of this general type which is adapted to impart a better finish to the heel and which is 'c'a-pable'of far, greater production capacity than has been possible with ma-, chines of this type heretofore.
' Before explaining in detail the present invention, and "the method-or mode ofoperation embodied therein, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited in its application to the details ofconstruction and arrangement of parts illustrated in the accom panying drawings, since the invention is ca pable of other embodiments and of being practised or, carried out in various ways. Also itis tobe understood that the phraseology or terminology employed herein is for the purpose of description and not of limitation, andit is not intended to limit the invention beyond the terms of the several claims hereto appended or the requirements of the prior art.

In a heel shank shaping machine, in combination, a shaping tool, a carriage, a shaft rotatably mounted in said carriage, a work carrier mounted to move with said shaft, a slide on said carrier, and means for clamping a heel upon said carrierincluding a stationary and movable clamp, said movable clamp comprising, a lever pivotally mounted upon said slide so as to permit engagement of one end withsaid heel, means 7 for adjusting said slide so that said lever may act upon said heel in the direction of the stationary clamp, driving mechanism for rotating said shaft including a train of gears one of which is movable axially, detachable means preventing axial movement of said riag'e and curved in the direction of movement of said work. 7
