The side walls of this slot converge adjacent the lower ends thereof where bearing shoulders 23 are provided from which said walls extend downwardly as at 24 and merge into the walls of laterally extending recesses 25 that-V are preferably rounded 'as shown. As shown in Figure 3, the port- ions 21 and 24 of the walls of the slot are disposed in Vsubstantially parallel planes. This slot 21 is'adapted to receive the latch 22 preferably of the construction illustrated,the said latchincluding a transversely bowed head 26 the width of which is slightly less than the distance between the inner edges of the walls23. A tongue-27 is extended downwardly from the headand has laterally lextending 'rounded projections 28 adapted to fitv within the recesses 25. Y The lower end of the tongue is adapted to bear against the bottom wall 29 of theslo't which thus forms a bearing for the latch. It will benoted that the bottom edge Yofthe tongue is inclined downwardlyV and inwardly whereas the edge'29vforming the wall ofthe slot is inclined upwardly and outwardly. A lap is thus provided which prevents the latch from shifting: outwardly from its proper engagementV with the socket ortube 20. A spring 30 is secured to the outer face l.of the socket 20 and bears against a fiat .surface 37' on the head 26 so as to hold the head normally pressed inwardly as shown.
The upper end of the latch 22 is concaved from side'to side to provideanend recessr 38 and the wall ofthis recess is beveled to an edge39.l 'l As shown in 'Figure 1the'wall ofthe socket .20 Ycan be thickened where the slot 21 is'provided, thus to properly strengthenthe socket and hold it against-"collapsing when subjectedfto severe strain.
Formed within the socket member 20 above VYa point diametrically opposite the slot 21Vis b la' longitudinal `slot40 inwhich is slidably mounted thefhead- 41 vof a stud 42 which is 'located withinthe upper portion of anA arcuate'blockor slip 43 which is inserted upward- `ly into the. socket member 20A and thereafter held in place by screwing the stud 42 thereinto. The upper walls of the recesses 46 normally overhang the sides of theupper ends of the latch. 1 i Y Y K `In using this tool ffor: the purpose of ex`V tractingbroken rods the controlling head 10 Vfis released so as-to rest upon the'lug or stud V19V and the tool is then loweredrinto the well If a collar or coupling is located at the upper end of the broken rod the same will be received within the socket 20 and as the latch 22 moves downwardly past vthe collar or coupling, it will be forced outwardly against the action of spring 30 until the upper end of the latch passes below the collar or coupling. At that time it will be forced back spring 30 so as to assume a 1 position astride the rod and under the coltween the slips 17 as the tool isvlowered.
The frictional engagement of the rod with the slips will force them upwardly and apart against the action ofthe sring 12. As lthe rod is brought to position well Within the bore 4 the tool is pulled upwardly. This will result inthe teeth gripping opposed portions vof the rod,'the-spring 12 forcing the slips downwardly upon the converging walls of the slots or grooves V7 so that the rod will be tightly held and will be drawn upwardly with the tool.v A Importance is attachedV to the fact that the slips can be held upby inserting a nail, pin or the like through the openings 18 and 14 sothat the slips will' be out of the way when the latch 22'is used for pulling a rod *as` hereinbefore described. f
. As this latch is subjected to severe strains vduring the pulling operation it is essential that the same be provided with the greatest possible bearing surface. F or this reason the arrangement of .the bearing shoulders 24, the Vearmg projections 28 and the Vrecesses 25 as well as the lapping-bearings29vare of considerable importance.

What I claim and desire to secure by LettersvPatent is: 1. A tool of the class described,'including a socket member having a lateralopening and superposed bearing portions,and1.a latch mounted for pivotal movement in said opening having superposed bearing portions cooperative with the bearingV portions on the socket to provide a multiple support for the latch and a load carried by the latch.
2. A tool of the class described, including a socket member having a lateral opening and superposed upwardly facing bearing portions inv` said opening, a latch pivotally mounted in said opening having downwardly facing bearing. portions cooperative with thek bearing portions on the sockettoprovide a multiple support for the latch when subjected to downward pressure offa load supported f by the latch, and means yieldingly urging the slot therein, said slot having oppositely ex v ltendingsockets, a latch movably supported within the slot and having laterally eXtendlatch into the socket.

5. In a tool of the` class described a socket,V member yhaving aV slot, a slip-removably mounted in the socket member and having a shoulder, alatch mounted to swing within the slot, and yieldingmeans for holding the v port an inserted rod.
