Description

Nov.4,1930. Y B. ARPS 1,180,513
TRACTION we Filed July 20, 1928 zit #70 4/ /96 3 I I 4 I l atented1lblov.4,1925) Application filed July 20,
This invention relates totraction lugs.
Tractlon lugs, as heretofore constructed,
have usually been made of castings; These castings are difficult and may be fairly easily '5 broken .by encountering unusual conditions for which they. are not designed for example,
when a stump or rock is struck by the'traction-lug during traction operation.
, This invention is designed to providea} 10 novel form of tract1onlugwhioh lsvery easy to make, which is formed from sheetmetal land requires no"castings, which is readily, pressed into shape, and; which is provided with sheet metal guiding lugs for the wheels 15 which are spot welded to the body-0f 'the- I member. Itis to be n'oted that the portion 7 is also laterally jcurvedtoit thelink. and
'Further ob ects are to iprovlde a traction lu'g'which has an open central port1on,wh1ch is provided with grlpplng fins tosecurea V ifirm' grip upon the ice or snow,'and which: I also is provided'with a wedge-shaped web or ,c
projection on opposite sides of the central openingso that itwill break the ice calzethat may form around the central opening, the
central openingallowing the free discharge of i'ceor snow due to" the action of the tire.
An embodiment of the invention is shown inthe accompanying drawings in which:
, as indicated at =4; [This downwardly-extending portion isformedion opposite; sides offthe body portion, as shown in Figures 2 and 3, and extends downwardly, preferably to a lesser depth than'the web 3.
Further, it, istobe noted from Figures 1 and '3that the b odypo'rtion hasha hollow,
, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device 9 with a part insectlon;
- central portion of the. device.
of the body portion is pressed downwardly,
downwardly projecting rib 5 pressed there- B ZABPS, Q3" NEW chema-W s on n I I v opening ,and en t'ends fromfopposite sides of:
the central opening to the extreme:side edges; c of the deviceL' eIt-i's of V or wedge shape and acts to breaku'panjy cake ofic'e-that may be formed beneath; this 1 portion of "the-device, 7 so that packingcannot occur." 7
strap membersfG which'are turned or looped,
as indicated at' g 'idto receive the connecting chains 87, Thez'inturned port1ons 8 are secured together with a portion of the part 6 to the body, of the traction lug by means of bolts} 9.1 Preferably, spfacerslO. are'positioned] between "the. portions 6" and 8 of the strap 55 to'thus providean-extensive bearing surface. I a A'pair of wheelv engaglng lugs or inwardly extending pr'o jections llare also forinedjfroni, i sheet metal and iare'provid'ed with lateral tongues 13 and theZfeetQlZ securely anchor; J a the wheelengaging membersll. Thesemem- 9 q bers present a'curvejd'face tolthe wheel-and also guide the wheel downwardly towards the p The central "portion ofthebodyis curved or arched downwa'rdly, as maybe seen'from Figure 1, so as 'to provide accontacting surface for the wheel which approximatelyfits the contour ofthe tire.-"' ,It isitobe noted that the strapmcmhers 6 freely transmit the-stresses or tension of the chains fromone sideof the device to theother. It will be seen further that the traction lug or treadpiece' is .of veryilightweightbut of 7 "great strength, as it is formed of sheet metal presse'dfto the shape described above and thus 9,5 equipped) with sufficient rigidity to, withstand the forces applied thereto.
It will be seen further that the traction lug. may be cheaply produced and is of relatively simple construction.
e ihisfrib isfinterruptejd by the p l t p 2 ifisaeiel Although the invention has been described in considerable detail, such description is intended as illustrative rather than limiting as the invention may be variously embodied and 5 as the scope of such invention is to be determined as claimed.
I claim: v
A traction; shoe including a body having a central opening, inwardly projecting Wheel guide lugs having inclined guide faces, lateral feet on each lug secured'to the-innerface'of r the body and tongues on the inner lateral ends of said lugs projecting into the centr'al'open- I ing and secured to said body. 7 15 In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at New Holstein, in the county of Calumet and State of Wisconsin. 7 Y i BRUNO ARPS.
