WATER CRUET ocpzs, 1930.
Filed Sept. 23, 1929 Patented Oct. 28, 1930 UNITED STATES JOHN JOSEPH OBRIEN, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA WATER cRUEr Application filed September 23, 1929. Serial N0.'394,541.
My invention'relates to water cruets, and more particularly to a special cruet for water service used in celebrating mass, and its principal object is to provide a combination container for water or other fluid with means for dropping or pouring the same therefrom as desired and with accuracy in dropping fluid therefrom.
In preparing thechalice at the offertory in celebrating mass itis practically impossible for an old or nervous priest to drop the water into the chalice in the usual manner with the obligatory accuracy and without spilling the water over the altar. v
It is to obviate this difficulty and embarrassment that I have conceived and produced a combination container for the water with means in connection therewith for accurately dropping the water therefrom into the chalice and with means in connection therewith for pouring water therefrom for the purification of the fingers of the priest.
Another object of my inventlon is to provide in a cruet a retarding means between the body of the cruet and the dropping spout for retarding the flow and preventing the full pressure of the fluid in the cruet at the dropping spout.
In order to fully explain my invention, I have illustrated it on the accompanying sheet of drawings, which I will now describe.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a water cruet embodying my invention Figure 2 is a bottom plan view thereof; and
Figure 3 is a top plan vlewthereof.
Referring now more in deta1l to the drawings, the body of the container 1s preferably of glass and as shown comprises a body 3,
the drawing being substantlally full size, with the reduced portion at 4, which forms a retarding means for the flow of fluid to the spouts 5 and 6. Spout 5 is a pourmg spout and spout 6 is a dropping spout with a small,
needle-like opening, while the top or neck 7 is provided with stopper 8, all substant1ally as shown. The dimensions are such that as the cruet is tilted to one side or to the other, for dropping water from the needle polnt, drop by drop, or for pouring water from the pouring spout, there is a retarding means in the reduced or inner bulge 4, for controlling the flow of the fluid from the body of the fluid over said bulge to the spout, and particularly to the dropping spout, thus making 5 it easier to accurately control the dropping of water orother'fluid from said cruet.
Thus I have provided an integral combination container and dropping and pouring cruet with a retarding means interposed be- .79 tween the dropping spout and the main body of the container portion, whereby to facilitate the task of accurately dropping the water or other fluid therefrom, and while Ihave shown and described one form of the invention, I am aware that changes can be made therein without departing from the spirit thereof, and I do not, therefore, limitv the invention to the exact details shown except as I may be limited by the hereto appended claims. .Z
I claim:
1. A water cruet for use in celebrating mass comprising an integral container terminating at one side in a pouring spout and at the 0pposite side in a dropping spout having a needle opening and at the top with a stopperreceiving opening, the body of said container being reduced in diameter immediately below said spouts and then increasing in diameter and forming a retarding means for water 3 moving toward the spouts. I
2. A water cruet for use in celebrating mass comprising an integral container terminating at one side in a pouring spout and at the opposite side in a dropping spout having a needle opening, the wall of the container body converging and then diverging toward the base thereof thus forming a reduced section immediately belew said spouts which reduced portion serves as a retarding means for water moving toward the spout, whereby to make possible more accurate dropping from the dropping spout.
3. A cruet for fluid comprising a container 93 body terminating at its, upper end in aspout to one side thereof for pouring and at the opposite side in a spout having a relatively restricted opening for dropping fluid therefrom, said container body being reduced in 1 diameter between the spouts and the body proper to form a retarding means for fluid moving toward the spouts and over which the fluid must move before reaching the spouts.
Signed at Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California, this 17th day of September, 1929.
JOHN JOSEPH OBRIEN.
