' AMOS HOLBROOK, OF LYNN, MAssAoHUsETTs' I MPROVEMENT IN STAIR-COVER FASTENINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 177,940, dated May 30, 187 6; application filed March 20, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
. Be it known that I, AMos HOLBROOK, of Lynn, of the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Stair-Carpet Fastening; and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure 1 is a top view, Fig. 2 a side elevation, and Fig. 3 a transverse section, of it. Fig. 4 denotes a perspective view of it as applied to a staircase and a carpet laid thereon.
The object of the fastening is the securing of the carpet at the vertex of the angle between the f riser and tread of two adjacent steps of a staircase.
In the drawings, the fastening is shown at A as composed of a button or short piece of metal, as represented, having a l1ole,c, through its middle, and being wedge-shaped in transverse section, and serrated or provided with teeth disposed on one-half of it, as shown at I). When in use, the toothed part of the fast- .ening is lapped on the carpet at one edge of arranged as shown, serve to prevent the carpet from being accidentally drawn out of engagement with the fastening.
In Fig. 4 the carpet is represented at O, the series of fastenings at A A, and their holding-screws at B B, the staircase being shown at D. i
When rods are used with eyebolts to confine a carpet to stairs, dust is apt to collect between the rods and carpet, and, besides, the rods are liable to be struck and detached by the feet of persons while ascending or descending the stairs. With my improvement all such are avoided.
As a new article of manufacture, the hereindescribed stair-carpet fastener, consisting of the button or piece of metal A, wedge-shaped in transverse section, and provided at or near' its middle with the. hole a, and at its bottom, and near one end, with a series of teeth, b, all arranged substantially as set forth, such fastening being for use with a screw, in manner as described, in confining a carpet to a staircase or a riser, and the tread thereof.
