IMPROVEMENT I N SIEVES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 177,894.,dated May 23, 1876; application filed April 20, 1876.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD STEWART, of Fort Madison, in the county of Lee, and State of Iowa, have inventeda new and valuable Improvement in Sieves; and I do hereby d'e- 'clare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

This invention has relation to sieves; and the nature of my invention consists in a sieve the hoop or body of which is grooved by upsetting the metal so as to receive wire-meshes. and separable to allow the same to be readily removed at pleasure, as will be hereinafter explained.

My object is to so construct the hoop of the sieve, and the sieve itself, that the latter can be readily detached from the hoop, thus allowing meshes of diiferent sizes to be used in the same hoop.

[n the drawings hereunto annexed, Adesignates the hoop or body of my improved sieve,

the ends of which are separable, and when they are connected are secured together by means of a spring-catch, a, and a pin, b. The upper and lower edges of the hoop are bound and stifl'eued by a wire, the extremities of which, indicated by the letter 0, enter tubular portions ofthehoop when the ends thereof are lapped together and fastened, thus stifi'ening and strengthening the connection. B designates the sieve proper, which is preferably composed of Woven wire secured to a wire hoop, e, in-any suitable manner. This hoop e is fitted into a groove, g, formed in the body A of the sieve by upsetting the sheet metal of which this body is made.

In practice, I contemplate using sieves B, the meshes of which willbe of different gages, according to the material to be siftedall the sieves being of the same diameter and adapted for the same hoop. The sieves may be sustained by cross-wire braces.

It will be seen from the above description that by detaching the ends of the body or hoop A the sieve B'can be removed from its groove and a sieve of a different gage substituted. I am thus able to use sieves of different gages in the same hoop.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. A sieve-hoop. having separable ends and a groove, E, substantially as and for the purposes described.

2. A sieve-hoop the body of which has separable ends, and a fastening therefor, in com bination with a detachable bottom, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
