IMPROVEMENT IN BUTTER-WORKERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 177,844, dated May 23, 1876; application filed April 17, 1876.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Mosns HUTOHINSON, of Owatonna, in the county of Steele and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Filtering Butter- Workers, of which the following is a specification:

The present invention relates to that class of devices known as lmtter-workers, and consists more particularly in suchconstrnction and arrangement of the several parts that in operation it will clearly and completely extract all the milk from the butter by a sort of pressure and filtering process, whereby, in flavor and grain,the butter will come out in a perfectstate, all as will now be more in detail set out and explained.

In the drawings, A denotes the box or receptacle, which is adapted to hold and contain or carry all the operative parts of the machine. This box or receptacle is made of any convenient form and size, and has, preferably, at one endot' the butter-space a, a partition, A, which rises up from the bottom part way to the top, and is curved on the side toward the butter-space, as now shown at a, while on the opposite side, toward the water-space a it may be perpendicular or inclined, or made in any suitable way. To the sides of the box or receptacle A, supported in suitable grooves a or otherwise detachably fastened or adjusted, 'is the upper filter B, which is made of any suitable material, and having a corrugated, fluted, or grooved face, 1), upon and over which is properly secured muslin, or any like or suitable material, b. The lower end or edge of this filter is so placed relative to the upper edge or top of partition A as to overlap it a little, and yet leave a small space between them, 'for the purpose to be afterward explained. The arms Q are suitably-journaled or hung upon the edge of the box A, now shown by hooks Upon the braces U, connecting the lower end of arms 0, is adjustably affixed the under or movable filter D. This is now shown as accombailed out, or drawn off by a plished by means of clamp E. This filter is grooved on its upper face at 01, like the upper filter, and in like manner this face is covered with muslin or other suitable material, 01.

As thus made, the operation of the-device is very simple. By the movement of the arms 0, a proper amount of butter is drawn up the incline a, and finally so pressed between the upper and lower filters that all the butter milk is pressedont, and finds its way down the chamber, between the contiguous groqved or corrugated faces of these filters, into the water-space a whence it may be emptied or spigot. I have now shown the latter at F.

When the filters are to be cleaned, they may be rinsed in hot water, or may be taken out, and the covering then removed from their faces, and both cover and filter cleaned.

In ordinary use it will be found that these covers prevent any considerable or troublesome accumulation of dirt or butter, or other substance.

These covers can be tacked on or clamped on, so as to be readily detached or attached.

In operation it will be found that this machine will fully express the buttermilk, and will not injure the butter by bruising or breaking the grain. Thus the flavor of the butter is always kept sweet and perfect, and the butteris in the very best shape for saleor use.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I consider new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In a suitable butter receptacle or box, A A, the combination of filter B, having grooved face 11, covered as described, with movable filters O D (Z 61, substantially as and for the purposes set forth. p

2. A filtering butter worker, adapted to press the butter between filters, having grooved surfaces, properly covered with muslin or analogous flexible filtering material, substantially as and for the purposes described.
