Atmo a. sensus, on' sAN'JosE, CALIFORNIA v.Appfication filed April 29, 1929.' Serial No. 359,162.v
V It is the object of the invention to provide It is to be understood, of course, that While a means and method of increasing the firing I have herein shown and described but one accuracy of rifies. specific embodiment of the invention,
In the drawing: changes in form, construction, and method of V Figure l is a side elevation of a rifle emformation and application' may be made 55 bodying my invention. within the scope of the appended claim.
Flo'ure 2 1s an enlarc'ed cross-section of I claim:
C' 23 the barrel of a rlfle embodymg my 1nvent1on A rlfle barrel having rlfling grooves at a point adjacent the breech.` formed therein throughout its length, the Figure 3 is an enlarged cross-section of rifling grooves being uniformly increased 111 Co the barrel at 3-3 ofV Figure l. cross-sectional area a distance lnwardly from Figure 4: is a longitudinal section of a porthe discharge end of the barrel, whereby to tion of a rifie embodying my invention.` permit the confined gases to escape around Fig. 5 is a fragmentary section, similar to the sides of the bullet just before its base Figs. 2 and 3, showing a modified form of emerges from the barrel. 1 65 my invention. ARNO R. SCHERF.
Referring now more particularly to the' drawing I show at 1 a rifie barrel provided with any number and form of rifling grooves V as at 2, with the lands indicated at 3. 79
In eifecting my invention I increase the depth of the several grooves 2 .equally throughout the latter part of their length, that is to say for about an inch or so Where they communicate With the discharge end of the barrel, indicated at 4.
By means of my invention as the bullet5' emerges from the barrel the confined gases are permitted to pass through the deepened grooves at 4 and escape upon all sides thereof.
It will be noted that by this method the gas pressure has expended its greatest force When the bullet reaches the end of the barrel and is then allowed to flow past the bullet before the base of the bullet emerges from the end of the barrel.
Ordinarily when the base of the bullet leaves the barrel its slightest deviation `from axial alignment therewith, or the deformed 407base of the bullet, will permit the gases to escape unequally about the base thereof, thereby accentuating the. Wabbling movement, but by reducing the gas pressure beg hind the bullet just before its base emerges from the barrel this result is satisfactorily 95 corrected, and the'development of unequal pressures effectually prevented. e
In Figure -5 I have shown a form of the invention in-which thecorners only of the I V V ma portion lare deepened as shown at 6.
