GUARD RA I L BRACKET Filed Sept 19. 1929 i In venior Framlfl Pa 'ye JIM/2Z6: PSJa/We A tiomey Patented Sept. 30, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT oFFIcE FRANK 1). PAGE AND CHARLES r. s'L-ANE, orcHnLsEA, MICHTGAN GUARD-RAIL BRACKET Application filed September 19,1929. Serial No. 393,758.
in its method of assembly, capable of casting in one piece and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture and install.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is disclosed an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations, and modifications may be resorted to, without departing from the spirit of the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings, wherein like reference characters designate like parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary top plan view of a railroad track, and a railroadtie illus' trating an adaptation of the device in accordance with the present invention therewith.
Figure 2 is a detailed section, taken substantially on the line 22 of Figure 1, and
Figure 3 is a perspective View of the bracket in accordance with the present invention.
Referring to the drawings, 5 designates a railroad tie having a tie plate 6 superunposed thereon with one of the rails 7 of a railroad track supported on the tie plate 6. It is to be understood that the bracket, in accordance with the present invention, utilizes a rail 8 as a guard rail, which is of the same configuration as the rail 7, whereby old rails will serve a useful purpose.
The bracket in accordance with the present invention, consists of a base plate 9, having a plurality of slots 10 therein. The plate 9 is secured to the upper face of the tie 5, by means of spikes 11, driven through the slots 10. A vertically extending flange 12 is formed integral at its lower end with the inner end of the plate 9 and on the upper edge of the flange 12 there is an inwardly directed lip 13. An upstanding right triangularreinforcing web 14 is formed integral with the plate 9 at its base and the perpendicular side thereof is integral co-extensivc with the inner face of the flange 12.
- A lug of compound contouris' indicated generally at 15, and is formed integral with the inner face of the flange 12 at the lower end thereof. The point of juncture between theouter end of the lug 15 and the inner face of the flange 12 is slightly above the lower face of the plate 9, so as to accommodate the inner end of the tie. plate 6, when in assembled relation. The upper face 16 of the lug 15 is plane in contour, merging in an angular shaped depression or shoulder 17, on its outer face. The plane face 16 merges with an angular shaped shoulder or depression 18 on its inner face. The lower face 19 of the lug 15 is plane and merges adjacent its inner end in an angular shaped shoulder 20.
In the application of the present invention, the guard rail 8 is disposed sidewise between the regular rail 7 with the web of the guard rail bracket resting upon the plane face 16 of the lug and the flange in abutment with the flange 12 of the brackets. 'The lip 13 overlaps the upper edge of the flange, whereas the shoulder 17 provides for seating the lower edge of the flange of the guard rail. The shoulder 18 provides for seating one half of the tread of the guard rail 8 and the shoulder 20 overlaps and abuts against the inner flange of the regular rail 7. The lower plane face 19 of the lug rests upon the tie plate 6. From the foregoing structure, 1t will be seen that a novelv bracket is provided for supporting a guard rail against the web of the regular rail 7.
It is to be understood that by describing in detail herein any particular form, structure, or arrangement, it is not intended to limit the invention beyond the terms of the several claims, or the requirements of the prior art.
What is claimed is:
1. A 'uard rail bracket comprising a base plate having slots therein to receive spikes for securing the bracket to the railroad tie,
an upstanding flange secured to the plate, a
lug of compound contour formed integral on the lower inner face of the flange for suporting a guard rail .sidewise between the 5 flange and the track rail, said flange having an inwardly directed lip at its upper end to overlap the upper edge of the flange of the guard rail.
2. A guard rail bracket comprising a base plate having slots therein to receive spikes for securing the bracket to the railroad tie, an upstanding flange secured to the plate, a lug of compound contour formed integral on the lower inner face of the flange for supporting a guard rail sidewise between the flange and the track rail, said flange having an inwardly directed lip at its upper end to overlap the upper edge of the flange of the guard rail, and a reinforcing rib of rightangular configuration connecting the plate and co-extensive with the outer face of the flange, said lug having plane upper faces merging with an angular shaped shoulder at each side thereof, said lug having a plane lower face merging with an angular shoulder at its inner end.
In testimony whereof we affix our signa tures. 30 FRANK D. PAGE.
