This invention relates to the manufacture of string or twine and is illustrated herein with reference to an ,improved method of manufacturing twine which may be used to produce a hard, sti paper twine with a smooth surface.
Twisted paper twine has been manufactured for many years and has been used for various purposes. In accordance with the purpose for which it was intended, the twine, as an incident to its manufacture, has been impregnated with a greater o'r'less amount of sizing material, commonly glue. This serves to make the twinel hard and stiff enough for any of the purposes for which it has heretofore been used, for example for the manufacture of furniture.

Inaccordance with this object, the
herein disclosed method of manufacturingV twine may be Ysaid to be characterized by the application of a supplemental surface coatingof sizing to twine which has been previously impregnated with sizing. As disclosed herein dry, twisted paper twine previously impregnated with glue is passed through a bath of liquid glue, whereby the twine is given a supplemental surface coating of glue, and any surplus glue is removed by a suitable stripper after which the twine is dried. This produces twine having a smooth surface and harderand stiffer than has heretofore beenmanufactured. While such twine may be used for other purposes, it is well adapted to be used for driven fastenings as set forthvin said Letters Patent.l With the above and other objects and features in view, the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the claims.
The drawing discloses mechanism adapted to be used in the manufacture of twine in accordance with my improved method.
In the drawing, twisted paper string or twine 12, which earlier in its manufacture has been impregnated through and through with sizing, for example glue, and then dried, is passed from a reel 14 over a suitable idler 16 into a bath of liquid glue 18 contained in a receptacle 20. A pulley 22 serves to guide the twine through the bath of glue. From the bath of glue the string or twine 12 passes over an idler 24 and through a stripper 26 to remove any surplus glue from the-twine before the glue has a chance to harden. The surplus glue thus removed flows from the stripper 26 down a plate 36and into a receptacle 38. From the stripper 26 the twine with the moist supplemental coating of glue thereon passes through a drier 28 which evaporates the moisture from theglue. From the drier 28 the twine with its supplemental surface coating of glue now hardened passes to a reel 30 onwhich it is wound.
rll`he bath of liquid glue 18 in the receptacle While this apparatus is well adapted to the carrying out ofthe method of the present invention, it should be understood that it is disclosed herein primarily for purposes of illustration. My new method is in no way dependent upon thejuse of thiseparticular apparatus since evidently the apparatus may take various forms.
Summarizing, in practising thenovel method as herein disclosed, dry, twisted paper twine, which has been previously impregnated with glue, is passed/from a reel 14 through a bath 18 of hot liquid glue where a supplemental surface coating o glue is applied to the twine, any surplus glue is removed by a stripper 26, and the twine is heated and the surface coating of glue dried by a drier 28.
Having described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. That improvement inmethods of manu,
facturing twisted pa er twine which comprises impregnating tiie twisted paper twine through and through with glue, drying the twine, passing the impregnated and dried paper twine through a bath of glue, thereby applying a supplemental surface coating of glue to the twine, and thereafter removing any surplus glue from the surface of the twine before theglue hardens.
2. That improvement in methods of manufacturing paper twine which comprises passing paper twine previously impregnated with glue t rough a bath of glue so as to apply a supplemental surface coating of glue to the twine, and then stripping any surplus glue from the surface of the twine before the glue hardens.
3. That improvement in methods of manufacturing aper twine which comprises passing twisted paper twine which has previously been impregnated with glue through a bath of glue,thereby y a plying a. supplemental surface coating o glue to the twine, stripping any surplus glue from the twine,
and heating the twine to dry the coating of glue upon the twine.
