Be it known that I, JOHN M; FARRAR, of Boston, of the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and use ful Machine for Stretching and Tacking Oarpets; and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which Figure l is a top view; Fig. 2, a side elevation; Fig. 3," a longitudinal section; and Figs. 4 and 5 are transverse sections, and Fig.6 a front-end view,ot"it. Fig. 7 is a section taken obliquely through its tack-receiving jaws.

In .such drawings, A denotes a furcated stretcher or bar, provided at its larger end with a toothed foot, B, shaped as shown. This toothed 'foot has an opening, a, through its middle, and over such opening it also has a pair of s'ocketed jaws, (J O, which, arranged as shown, are pivoted-to the, foot, and provided with a spring, I), for closing them. In using the machine its toothed foot is to be borne against a carpet, so as to crowd it up to a position for being nailed to its floor. This having been accomplished, the hammer is to be impelled forward, so as to cause a tack held] by the jaws to be driven from them through the carpet and into thefloor.
