Application filed July 13,
The main object of this invention is to provide a reversible latch havingfew parts and these parts being simple and economical to produce and easily assembled. v
A further object is to provide a latch in which the spring is supported so that the strain thereon is minimized, the spring for actuating the latch also being adapted to hold the latch detent yieldingly in engaging position. a I
Objects pertaining to details and economics of my invention will definitely appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined in the claims.
A structure which embodies the features of my invention isclearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary view of a door and its casing with one of my latches mounted thereon, the latch casing being shown in section.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary View looking from the left of Fig. 1. r
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view of a latch mainly in section on line 38 of Fig 1..
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary plan view with the casing in section, the latch being'shown n keeper engaging position by full lines and 1n retracted or unlatched position by dotted lines. j Fig. -5 is a fragmentary perspectlve view of the bolt.
Fig. 6 is a perspective View of the bolt fulcrum member.
Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the bolt de- H I tent.
In the accompanying drawing 1 represents a door and 2 its casing. The body 3 of the housing is preferably a stamping. It is provided with a back or base platet having spaced slot-like openings 5 thereln constituting catches coacting with the bolt as will be hereafter described. The rear wall 6 of the housing is provided with an opening 7 through which the bolt 8. is disposed; The front of the housing has an opening 9 therein in which the bolt swings, the bolt being provided with a hand piece 10. I
The bolt is chambered and provided with a longitudinal slot 11 in its top wall and also sae: Serial naewess.
- a slotlike opening 12 in its top wall spaced from the rearledge of the slot 11. w A' lug 13 projects from the rear edgeof the slot.
..I The fulcrum member isprovided with a downwardly projecting lug 17 'oppositethe 'flange 15. This lug is headed or upset at 18.
The fulcrum member is provided with a pair 'of; laterally projecting arms 19 having rounded terminal portions 20 in bearing engagement with the rear wall of the housing which in the embodiment illustrated: consti- GRAND RAPIDS! tutes an abutment therefor. .The bolt is thus supported for pivotal or swinging and longi- 7 when the ,bolt is tilted longitudinally, the detent is' actuated to disengage its lugs 26 from the: slot 5.: x f [Thefidetent is actuated by means of the coiled spring27 one end of which engages and issup'portedbyfthe arm24; The other end of the spring. engages over the lug 13 on the bolt andis in thrust engagement with the fulcrum member, thereby applying yielding pressure thereto and acting to yieldingly hold the bolt in its-keeper engaging or contralpositionshown in Fig. 1. v .The keeper 28 is preferably provided with a trip or tappet 29 adapted to engage the projecting end of the bolt when the door is swung to ,closed position, thereby disengaging therdetent and (permitting the spring 27 to throw the bolt into engagement with the keeperiZS. flW herethe trip or tappet 29 is not present the detent. maybe released by an inward pressure on the hand-piece 10 of the bolt which tilts the bolt sufficiently to disen- I have illustrated an embodiment or adapposition, said bolt constituting means for retation of my invention well adapted for use leasing said detent.
