IMPROVEMENT IN AUGER-HANDLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. [77,529, dated May 16, 1876; application filed March 13, 1875.

My invention has for its object to furnish angers which shall be so constructed that the bit can be readily attached to and detached" from the handle, and in which the bit, when attached, will be firmly held in place, thereby furnishing the public with a cheap and dura- 4 ble handle.

A represents the bit, and B represents the handle. Upon the middle part of the handle, which is formed in one piece, and not in two parts, is placed a metallic band, 0, threeinches, more or less, in length, and upon the lower sideof which is formed, or within it is placed, an inwardly-projecting nut, 0 which enters a hole or recess in the handle B. Upon the upper end of the shank of the bit A is formed a screw-thread, which fits into the screw-thread 0f the nut 0 The bitA, just below the screwthread, is squared off to receive the notch of the small wrench holding or looking plate I). The locking-plate D is so formed as to fit upon the lower side of the band 0 and handle B. In the locking-plate D is formed a hole to receive a small stud, 0 attached to the band 0 near its end, and which has a small transverse hole formed through it to receive a key, E, for securing the said locking-plate in place. The locking-plate D may be secured in place by a spring-catch or other fastening, if desired.
By this construction the locking-plate D- prevents the bit from turning in the handle when the anger is in use, and at the same time allows the bit to be readily detached and attached when desired. 7
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A nut, 0 for the threaded end of angerbit, held in the socket of the auger handle by a surrounding band, 0, as and for the purpose described.
