IMPROVEMENT IN DUMPlNG-BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 177,507, dated May 16, 1876; application filed April 10, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JoEL W. HIATT, of Iowa-Falls, in the county of Hardin and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Dumping-Box,- of which the following is a specification In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a side elevation, and Fig. 2 an end view, of my improved dumping-box for cars,
made of sections of a circle, of Wood, metal,
or other suitable material. The boxA is propelled, moved, or rocked from its common horizontal position to a dumping position, for discharging the coal, by a hand lever or crank, O, that is rigidly attached to a cog-Wheel, C of a loose hub, 0 that is connected, by an interior projecting pin, to the grooved shaft A of the dumping-box A. The cog-wheel O of the crank 0 gears with a straight or circular rack, D, according to the location of the cogwheel and journal at the end of box. A corresponding guide-bar, D, above the hub se cures the steady motion, and defines also the extent of motion, of the box. The rockers B gear, by side pins a or equivalent means, with rack guide-bars E of the platform of the car, scales, or other device in connection with which the dumping-box is used.
The platform may be mounted on wheels for greater convenience in loading and delivering. The boX may also be arranged to dump to either side by extending the rack and top guide and rocker guide-bar tocorresponding length at the opposite side of the boxshaft. Suitable stop-springs F, that look 011 pins of the box, retain the same in horizontal position for filling, and haveto be released for (lumping the charge of coal or other material.

The dumping-box A, having shaft A, and mounted on rockers B, having pins or, the parallel rack-bars E and D, the crank O, pinion G and hub (3 all combined as shown and described, to operate as specified.
